Tryon Arts & Crafts School (TACS) is delighted to announce “Hearth & Anvil”, an open-flame dinner with acclaimed chef John Wilson, scheduled for Friday, March 22, 2024, 6:00-8:30 pm. This ticketed outdoor event invites members of the community to embrace the rich traditions of Western North Carolina and Appalachian open-flame cooking. Combining the laid-back atmosphere of a casual mountain picnic with a touch of sophistication, the event will take place at TACS, offering attendees a unique and memorable experience.
Set against the backdrop of the scenic outdoors, long tables adorned with rustic linens will create the perfect setting for a communal feast. Renowned chef John Wilson, from Rural Seed Restaurant, will showcase his culinary expertise with a curated menu featuring locally sourced ingredients, including both meat and vegetable dishes. Notably, John will demonstrate open-flame cooking methods on TACS’ newly unveiled, custom-designed grill—crafted in the school’s forge and welding studios exclusively for this event.
As guests dine beneath the open sky, skilled artisans will captivate with live craft demonstrations, showcasing the intricacies of blacksmithing and flame-based crafts. Renowned bladesmith Gerry Drew from G. L. Drew Knives will share his forging techniques, while TACS instructor Jim Cullen will showcase the fiery processes of live raku pottery. The ambient tunes of traditional music, presented by the Will Trakas Trio, will elevate the overall experience, and complemented nicely with the fine wines from event sponsor, Biltmore Wines, and locally sourced craft beer.
Combining casual elegance with the picturesque backdrop of the Blue Ridge foothills, guests are invited to immerse themselves in a perfect blend of culinary delight and artistic craftsmanship. Tickets for this exceptional event are priced at $75 for members and $95 for nonmembers.
TACS extends its gratitude to local farms and purveyors, including Caitlyn Farms, Anson Mills, and Twisted Fork, with more partners to be announced soon.
For enthusiasts of local farms, fresh food, and crafts, reservations for this unique experience can be made by visiting https://tryonartsandcrafts.org/hearth-and-anvil/ or by contacting Tryon Arts & Crafts School at [email protected] or 828-859-8323. Join us for a celebration of community, culture, and creativity at Hearth & Anvil.

Jack’s Bluegrass Brunch kicks off every Sunday at 12 noon — with lively bluegrass tunes courtesy of The Jack of the Wood Bluegrass Brunch Boys from 1-3pm. Sip a Bloody Mary or Mimosa or a warm Irish coffee. Tasty brunch specials alongside our regular menu and 18 taps of rotating craft brews! Sláinte, y’all!
Barn Door Cider Works is hosting a Raclette Pop Up featuring locally made alpine-style Raclette cheese by Blue Ridge Mountain Creamery, paired with barrel-aged ciders from Barn Door Ciderworks.
Local cheese maker and glass blower Victor Chiarizia will be at the cidery to talk about his creamery and dish up his utterly delicious Raclette style cheese he aptly named The Richard. The day’s menu includes Victor’s cheese served in the traditional Swiss style of heating the large wheel of cheese under a flame, then scraping the melted cheese onto boiled potatoes served with pickles. Barn Door dry ciders are the perfect pairing. In addition to four Barn Door ciders there will be local craft beers on tap, wine, and non-alcoholic beverages.
As the owner of Blue Ridge Mountain Creamery, Victor has made cheese for over 10 years and is the only maker in the region with a natural rocked-wall cave for aging cheese. A man of many talents, he’ll be melting cheese with a contraption he himself created.
Jack’s long-running Traditional Irish Music Session is the perfect way to enjoy the Celtic-influenced sounds of talented pluckers from all over WNC & further afield! Stop in to enjoy a pint or afternoon Irish coffee with the music! Sláinte!

This celebration supports both the local restaurants that host the events and raises money for WNCAP’s life-saving services.
Now in its 22nd year, Dining Out for Life has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in the fight against HIV/AIDS.
The money raised by WNCAP’s annual Dining Out for Life is more critical than ever. Your donations provide care, rental assistance, and education in our fight against HIV/AIDS. Dine Out. End HIV.

A roundtable discussion between foodways scholar Marcie Cohen Ferris and cookbook authors Sandra Gutierrez and Ronni Lundy, will be in the Blue Ridge Room of UNC Asheville’s Highsmith Union on March 27 at 6 p.m.
The event, fourth in the Thomas Howerton lecture series, “Diverse Roots at the Common Table: Culinary Conversations in the American South,” will discuss Latin American and Appalachian foodways in North Carolina, highlighting the state’s wide-reaching culinary diversity.
This event is free and open to the public, and will be livestreamed on the University’s YouTube. To attend in-person, please register here.
Marcie Cohen Ferris
Born and raised in northeastern Arkansas, Ferris’s deep attachment to the study of place and the American South is rooted in her childhood. For over forty years, she has studied, documented, interpreted, exhibited, taught, and written about the South, largely through its foodways, material culture, and the southern Jewish experience. As a professor emeritus in the Department of American Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Ferris is an editor for Southern Cultures, a quarterly journal of the history and cultures of the U.S. South, and a project of The Center for the Study of the American South (CSAS). Ferris is the author of “The Edible South: The Power of Food and the Making of an American Region,” (UNC Press, 2014), “Matzoh Ball Gumbo: Culinary Tales of the Jewish South” (UNC Press, 2005; nominated for a James Beard Award, 2006).
Ronni Lundy
Ronni is hands-down one of the most well-known—if not THE most well-known—experts on Appalachian food. Her 2016 Appalachian cookbook, “Victuals,” won the James Beard Book of the Year award and the award for Best in American Cooking. She is the author of a number of other cookbooks, including “Shuck Beans”, “Stack Cakes and Honest Fried Chicken” and many others. Her edited collection, “Cornbread Nation 3: Foods of the Mountain South” is required reading for anyone interested in food, literature, and representation. Ronni was a founding member of the Southern Foodways Alliance and the Appalachian Food Summit. In 2009, she received the Southern Foodways Alliance’s Craig Claiborne Lifetime Achievement Award. Currently she runs Plott Hound Books in Burnsville, North Carolina.
Sandra A. Gutierrez
Sandra A. Gutierrez, journalist, author, food historian, and professional cooking instructor, has taught thousands how to cook. Born in the U.S., this bilingual, award-winning journalist and author of five cookbooks is considered one of the top national experts on Latin American Foodways and on the United States Southern Regional cuisine. She is the former food editor for “The Cary News.” Gutierrez has over 3,000 original recipes and over 1500 articles published worldwide.
In 2017, Gutierrez was awarded the M.F.K Fisher Grand Prize Award for Excellence in Food Writing. Sandra’s work and life story were featured in the Exhibit Gateways/Portales at the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum from 2016-2019. In 2019, her work and culinary objects became part of the permanent FOOD exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Gutierrez is the author of “The New Southern-Latino Table: Recipes that Bring Together the Bold and Beloved Flavors of Latin America & The American South” (UNC Press 2011), “Latin American Street Food: The Best Flavors of Markets, Beaches, and Roadside Stands from Mexico to Argentina” (UNC Press 2013), and many others.
