Tryon Arts & Crafts School (TACS) is delighted to announce “Hearth & Anvil”, an open-flame dinner with acclaimed chef John Wilson, scheduled for Friday, March 22, 2024, 6:00-8:30 pm. This ticketed outdoor event invites members of the community to embrace the rich traditions of Western North Carolina and Appalachian open-flame cooking. Combining the laid-back atmosphere of a casual mountain picnic with a touch of sophistication, the event will take place at TACS, offering attendees a unique and memorable experience.
Set against the backdrop of the scenic outdoors, long tables adorned with rustic linens will create the perfect setting for a communal feast. Renowned chef John Wilson, from Rural Seed Restaurant, will showcase his culinary expertise with a curated menu featuring locally sourced ingredients, including both meat and vegetable dishes. Notably, John will demonstrate open-flame cooking methods on TACS’ newly unveiled, custom-designed grill—crafted in the school’s forge and welding studios exclusively for this event.
As guests dine beneath the open sky, skilled artisans will captivate with live craft demonstrations, showcasing the intricacies of blacksmithing and flame-based crafts. Renowned bladesmith Gerry Drew from G. L. Drew Knives will share his forging techniques, while TACS instructor Jim Cullen will showcase the fiery processes of live raku pottery. The ambient tunes of traditional music, presented by the Will Trakas Trio, will elevate the overall experience, and complemented nicely with the fine wines from event sponsor, Biltmore Wines, and locally sourced craft beer.
Combining casual elegance with the picturesque backdrop of the Blue Ridge foothills, guests are invited to immerse themselves in a perfect blend of culinary delight and artistic craftsmanship. Tickets for this exceptional event are priced at $75 for members and $95 for nonmembers.
TACS extends its gratitude to local farms and purveyors, including Caitlyn Farms, Anson Mills, and Twisted Fork, with more partners to be announced soon.
For enthusiasts of local farms, fresh food, and crafts, reservations for this unique experience can be made by visiting https://tryonartsandcrafts.org/hearth-and-anvil/ or by contacting Tryon Arts & Crafts School at [email protected] or 828-859-8323. Join us for a celebration of community, culture, and creativity at Hearth & Anvil.

What is Forest Floor?
Forest Floor is a place where kids:
- Are free to be kids; to play, laugh, shout, and run wild the way we did when we were kids.
- Can find others who love nature as much as they do and find support and friendship in peers.
- Can spend time with adults who really care about their developmental journey and want to hear their stories.
- Can explore who they really are and be celebrated for being themselves.
Forest Floor provides high quality Nature-Connection Mentoring programs with lasting benefits for health, concentration, and emotional well-being.
We get your kids outdoors to think, connect, learn, make, and move.
And most importantly, to have fun!
We use a proven mentoring system and have small classes with mentor-camper ratios of just 1 to 7. Your kids will get more than just outdoor activity, they will be subtly coached and encouraged to reach their greatest potential.

Come join SAHC and folks from the Friends of Rocky Fork for a guided hike in this stunning Tennessee state park! This special hike will begin in the parking area, hike along crystal clear streams, traverse mountainsides, cross historic sites, and ultimately hit the Appalachian Trail before returning to our starting point. These trails are all beautifully designed and crafted by the Rocky Fork Gorillas and members of the Friends of Rocky Fork. These members have also volunteered to lead the way through this wild landscape and highlight historic events.
Rocky Fork State Park is named after the cool waters that run down its center and is located along the Appalachian Trail corridor and the Tennessee-North Carolina border, between Johnson City, TN and Asheville, NC. The property is adjacent to more than 22,000 acres of U.S. Forest Service-designated wilderness. Before Rocky Fork’s acquisition by The Conservation Fund and U.S. Forest Service, it was one of the largest unprotected tracts in the southern Appalachian Mountains. From 2006-2012, SAHC lobbied congress to secure funding to protect 10,000 acres of the Rocky Fork watershed that was previously slated for development. With help from Senator Lamar Alexander and many other partners, SAHC secured funding, and the property was acquired from a timbering company. Come join us for this hike as we celebrate all that we’ve accomplished together!
