Buncombe County Public Libraries have added the popular Kanopy Kids streaming video service for library card holders. Kanopy Kids offers curated, age-appropriate content for young viewers with beloved characters from Sesame Street, Madeline, Blippi, and Paddington Bear.
Our Kanopy Kids subscription begins on July 1 and offers unlimited access to over 2,000 enriching and entertaining films and TV series. Parents can set parental controls on the Kanopy app to make sure children are only viewing Kanopy Kids content.
Films can be streamed free of charge from any computer, television, mobile device, or platform by downloading the Kanopy app for iOS, Android, AppleTV, Chromecast, Amazon Fire TV, or Roku. To access Kanopy, visit the library website, or download the app to your phone, TV, or digital device. If you have any questions, contact your local library.

Do you have a boundary-pushing, innovative performance piece, short film or installation that you’re ready to share?
We will open applications for the film portion of the festival in fall 2023. Films must be submitted via FilmFreeway. Our application fee for films is $5.
NOW CONSIDERING WORKS OF ALL KINDS
We accept live performances from 5 to 60 minutes in length, plus installations and films. We’re open to other types of performance as well – let’s talk! Depending on its length, your piece may be grouped with another show, or scheduled as a Random Act of Fringe. RAFs are free and open to the public, and artists receive a stipend for their performance, rather than relying on door sales.
Typically each artist with a ticketed show gets 2 performances. But in 2024, we’re exploring the option of giving a few shows 3 performances, at select venues only. Our venues range from 20-80 person capacity.

3. THE ASHEVILLE FRINGE ARTS FESTIVAL IS A JURIED FESTIVAL.
We carefully review each and every submission. You’ll know by late October if your piece is selected. Should your piece get selected, there is a $35 participation fee.
Budget cuts, increased testing requirements, and narrowing of curricula have significantly impacted school districts’ ability to provide inclusive, high-quality visual and performing arts experiences. And, while some families are able to subsidize children’s exposure to performing, visual, and fine arts experiences, students living in poverty face numerous systemic barriers which make such access nearly, if not entirely, impossible.
The Arts for Schools grant helps nonprofit arts organizations and qualified teaching artists in Buncombe County provide arts focused performances, workshops, residencies, and field trips for students attending K-12 public schools in Buncombe County. Priority is given to proposals benefiting economically disadvantaged schools and/or underserved communities, ensuring that students from all demographics receive the benefits of these programs. Multicultural programs will also receive priority. Grants range from $500-$1,000.

Edge, the newest exhibit showing in the airport art gallery, is open to the public now through July 21, 2022. The local art is unique, bold and is sure to capture the imaginations of its viewers.
The local artists’ work featured in this exhibit consist of many different mediums. Diane Bronstein creates complex and mesmerizing pieces with photographs, embroidery floss and other materials. Susan Devitt uses bold colors and vivid details to capture the beauty and possibilities of nature with her acrylic paintings. Jen Pacicci crafts peaceful and majestic collages of landscapes using watercolor and torn paper. Kurt Ross designs clay vessels of varying materials and glazes that are each unique in their thoughtful and clean design. Paul Silverman presents ceramic figures of various tools and vintage items that trick the eye in their realistic appearance and awe with their attention to detail.
“The Edge exhibit welcomes travelers and residents to Asheville with a vibrant and unique display this spring at AVL,” said Alexandra Ingle, Brand and Experience Designer at AVL and curator of the gallery. “We are excited at each gallery opening to bring a fresh taste of our talented WNC art community into the airport.”

Are you a community scientist itching to contribute to a North Carolina study? NC State University is conducting a study about human exposure to ticks in North Carolina and is partnering with Buncombe County Public Health to help distribute tick collection kits.
Participants should be 18 years or older and would be required to collect ticks, complete a survey, and send their findings via mail.
The study will evaluate a community science approach to tick surveillance and exposure risk in North Carolina.
Study Details
- Participants will only submit ticks pulled off of themselves (not animals)
- Each tick kit should come from the same time and location, use different kits for other times and locations
- Participants will fill out a survey for each kit including identifying the type of tick
- No information will be shared and participants will not be identified from their responses
- Kits will be sent back to researchers in a provided return envelope
- There is no pay for participation
Tick kits can be picked up at 30 Valley Street in Asheville. Each kit will include a postage-paid envelope, two collection vials, instructions for collecting ticks, and a survey for participants to complete.

he Center for Craft is excited to announce an innovative partnership with the University of North Carolina Asheville’s UNC Gillings Master of Public Health (MPH) program, to explore the community vitality impacts of engaging with craft. Six awarded artists, artist collectives, or art organizations will be selected for $2,200 grants to use craft to engage with regional communities in Western North Carolina.
Center for Craft Executive Director Stephanie Moore conveys “Craft contributes significantly to the vitality of community by fostering creativity, preserving cultural heritage, and promoting social connections.” Through the practice of traditional and contemporary crafts individuals develop skills, express their artistic abilities, and find a sense of purpose and fulfillment. Craft also plays a crucial role in preserving cultural traditions and strengthening identity, passing down knowledge from one generation to the next. Craft activities bring people together for social interactions and collaboration that create a sense of belonging. This collaboration is an opportunity to better understand the ways in which craft acts as an indicator of and pathway to a healthy, resilient future.
Proposals from artists, collectives, and organizations in Western North Carolina are encouraged to submit a letter of interest to be selected for the pilot program. Proposed projects should take place between September – November 2023, and engage the community with craft in some way. Each selected project will be paired with a UNC Asheville MPH student who will use methods they are learning in their coursework, taught by UNC Asheville faculty member and MPH co-director Dr. Ameena Batada, to explore and measure impacts of each project.

Alfred Russel Wallace (1823–1913) was perhaps the most famed naturalist of the Victorian age. His expeditions to remote Amazonia and southeast Asia were the stuff of legend. A collector of thousands of species new to science, he shared in the discovery of natural selection and founded the discipline of evolutionary biogeography. Radical by Nature tells the story of Wallace’s epic life and achievements, from his stellar rise from humble origins to his complicated friendship with Charles Darwin and other leading scientific lights of Britain to his devotion to social causes and movements that threatened to alienate him from scientific society.
James Costa draws on letters, notebooks, and journals to provide a multifaceted account of a revolutionary life in science as well as Wallace’s family life. He shows how the self-taught Wallace doggedly pursued bold, even radical ideas that caused a seismic shift in the natural sciences, and how he also courted controversy with nonscientific pursuits such as spiritualism and socialism. Costa describes Wallace’s courageous social advocacy of women’s rights, labor reform, and other important issues. He also sheds light on Wallace’s complex relationship with Darwin, describing how Wallace graciously applauded his friend and rival, becoming one of his most ardent defenders. Weaving a revelatory narrative with the latest scholarship, Radical by Nature paints a mesmerizing portrait of a multifaceted thinker driven by a singular passion for science, a commitment to social justice, and a lifelong sense of wonder.
James T. Costa is professor of biology and executive director of Western Carolina University’s Highlands Biological Station. His books include Darwin’s Backyard: How Small Experiments Led to a Big Theory; Wallace, Darwin, and the Origin of Species; The Annotated Origin; and most recently Radical by Nature: The Revolutionary Life of Alfred Russel Wallace. He is the recipient of the Alfred Russel Wallace Medal of the Wallace Memorial Fund and the 2023 Stephen Jay Gould Prize of the Society for the Study of Evolution
Grovewood Gallery will present Inqwiry, an outdoor exhibition of wire animal sculptures by Bakersville, NC, artist Josh Coté. This event is open to the public and free to attend. Inqwiry will remain on view through August 13, 2023.
The addition of preservation grants to our existing efforts in advocacy, technical support, preservation easements, and education, will allow us to reach a new and diverse audience. This program will allow us to support both large and small projects from downtown Asheville to our rural and under-served communities.

Tracey Morgan Gallery is pleased to present Snapshot, an exhibition of new work by artist Rachel Meginnes. This is Meginnes’ second exhibition with the gallery.
A reception for the artist will be held Friday, July 21 from 6-8PM.
Snapshot is a collection of deconstructed quilts and discarded textiles woven on a digital loom, utilizing images sourced from Meginnes’ surrounding environment. From graffiti-covered surfaces on Mission Street in San Francisco where she used to live, to her now neighbor’s yard art in North Carolina, Meginnes transforms casually collected photographs into boldly colorful and highly textured abstract weavings. The works are part archive, part portal – her unique interpretation of the world around her.
Rachel Meginnes began working in deconstructed textiles in 2004, a process she continued to hone during a three-year artist residency at Penland School of Craft in North Carolina (2012-2015). Using old quilts as her base material, she both honors the tradition of quilting, while maintaining a dialog with makers of the past, through a contemporary lens. Says Meginnes, “There’s so much history in a quilt, from the materials used to make the quilt to the patterns chosen, to the wear and tear embedded in the object over time.”
Her recent work focuses on the reuse of quilts alongside additional unwearable textiles donated to her by Circular Triangle, a flagship organization in the Triangle region of North Carolina that accelerates a just transition to a circular economy. While this new work utilizes a digital loom, the process is still done by hand, in the manner of traditional rag weaving. These pieces strike a harmonious balance between craft and fine art, embracing a strong color palette and an energetic use of line.
Rachel Meginnes received a BA in Art from Earlham College in 1999 and an MFA in Fibers from the University of Washington, Seattle in 2005, spending two years studying traditional Japanese textile processes in Morioka, Ja-pan. In 2012, she was awarded a three-year residency at Penland School of Craft. Her artwork has been exhibited nationally and internationally and can be found in the collections of the United States Art in Embassies Program in Amman, Jordan, the University of Arkansas, the Cameron Art Museum, and others. She lives and works near Bakersville, NC.

One of our newest Events is the Smoky Mountain Beer Run! A specialty train excursion featuring 2 samples of local craft beer on-board and a final sample when we stop off at the layover, at Innovation Station in Dillsboro, NC.
Every ‘Beer Run’ has a fun theme to help get into the party mood but also makes every run unique and one of a kind. With Craft Beer and a Themed menu to match, you’ll be treated and transported as we cruise through the Smoky Mountains while enjoying a night in ‘Beer Country.’
Hop aboard our very own Hot Steam Time Machine and get ready for a blast from the past as we party like it’s 1989. Come dressed to impress and ready to drink some beer! Mullets and Shoulder pads are welcome.
Founded in 1991, we are Warren Wilson College’s educational program of summer folk arts workshops held on our campus in the Swannanoa Valley near Asheville in the heart of North Carolina’s beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.
Each year, we offer a variety of week-long programs in various forms of folk music and dance over a five-week period in July and August, taught by some of the finest folk artists and instructors in the world.

Live music, dance, and performance arts are offered alongside camp and lake outdoor adventures, healing arts workshops and practitioners, the longest continually running poetry slam in the world, kids adventures and workshops, mountain drum circle, and so much more! |

Eblen Charities - Transportation Assistance for Western North Carolina Residents for Job Access: Eblen Charities aims to provide transportation assistance to low-income residents to improve job access and economic mobility. They offer gas vouchers ranging from $25 to $50 to help individuals attend job interviews and medical appointments and cover transportation costs until they receive their first paycheck. The organization plans to expand its transportation assistance program by creating an online portal for voucher requests. With this grant, they aim to serve an additional 200 job seekers, increase the voucher amounts to address rising gas prices and double their program budget.

Drop off and register your stuffed animal friend at the Oakley/South Asheville Library starting Wednesday, July 19th through Friday, July 21st. Your stuffed animal will spend Friday night listening to stories, playing games, and probably staying up very late. Pick them up after 12pm Saturday, July 22nd. Each stuffed animal will receive a certificate for their participation. Each child will receive a photo of their friend at the sleepover! Only one animal per person. Please make sure you can sleep without your stuffed animal for the night. Open to children of all ages. |

So much so that we were inspired to create this guide, first published in May 2023. We’ll be updating it a few times a year, and we encourage you to check in with the businesses listed in the guide about availability. Often merch sells out quickly or is a limited edition.
While these items aren’t strictly secondhand, we love supporting local businesses and know firsthand how lovely it is to hold on to a memory of a special place you visited on a trip.

We are gearing up for a youth talent showcase to be held at Burial Beer (South Slope location) at our August 13 event: LEAF Famtastic Sunday. The Talent Showcase will kick off at Burial starting at 1 p.m. Want to be part of it? Auditions are on Saturdays in July at LEAF Global Arts. The talent showcase is free to enter and the August 13 event is free as well.
