Larry & Joe
Mar 28 @ 8:00 pm
Wortham Center for Performing Arts

Wortham Presents Larry & Joe.

Friday, March 28, 2025 at 8 p.m.

Born continents and cultures apart, this dynamic duo delivers a captivating fusion of Venezuelan and Appalachian folk music on harp, banjo, cuatro, fiddle, maracas and more. Venezuela-born Larry Bellorín is a legend of Llanera music, a rhythmic folk tradition from his home country. Forced to seek political asylum in North Carolina, the multi-instrumentalist met Grammy-nominated bluegrass and old-time musician Joe Troop, founder of the acclaimed “Latingrass” band Che Appalache. Together, their stories converge through a unique blend of musical traditions — demonstrating that music truly knows no borders.

LISTEN: Hear the artists perform and learn more about their unique stories — including how their destinies intertwined — in this episode of NPR’s Here & Now: wbur.fm/3X2fB6e

“Their virtuosity is jaw-dropping live … they both take great, transcendent joy in making this music together, and that kind of joy is contagious.” — Folk Alley

Klezmer Cine Concert

April 22, 2025 at 7:00 p.m.

JSCA and The Center for Jewish Studies at UNCA present the silent film The Ancient Lawwith live original music composed and performed by world-renowned klezmer violinist Alicia Svigals and celebrated silent film pianist Donald Sosin. The Ancient Law (Das alte Gesetz) is an important piece of German-Jewish cinematic history, contrasting the closed world of an Eastern European shtetl with the liberal mores of 1860s Vienna. With its historically authentic set design and ensemble of prominent actors, The Ancient Law is an outstanding example of the creativity of Jewish filmmakers in 1920s Germany. Beautifully restored by Deutsche Kinemathek, the story is reminiscent of Al Jolson’s The Jazz Singer, which was made four years later.

The film is 2 hrs, 15 min with no intermission and English subtitles. For questions and more information please email [email protected].

Wortham Presents The Tannahill Weavers

Friday, April 25, 2025 at 8 p.m.

Feel the unmatched energy and passion of one of the world’s premier traditional Celtic bands, whose diverse repertoire spans the centuries with fire-driven instrumentals, original ballads and lullabies and humorous tales of life in the lowlands. Formed in 1968 at a pub in Paisley, Scotland, the versatile band turns its acoustic excitement loose with an electrifying effect — delivering “an especially eloquent mixture of the old and the new” (The New York Times).

“The music may be pure old time Celtic, but the drive and enthusiasm are akin to straight ahead rock and roll.” — Winnipeg Free Press

Apr 26 @ 7:30 pm
Hendersonville Theater

Hendersonville Theatre welcomes back Asheville Americana band, Amanda Anne Platt & the Honeycutters to its Hometown Sound Music Series in February. Amanda Anne Platt & The Honeycutters’ music is nuanced, bringing insight and wit to the stories Platt tells through songwriting. Lyrically driven, the country roots music often inspires introspection, whether it be about life on the road, heartache, or hope. There is an empathetic and charming wit ingrained in songwriting. She has a knack for accessing a deep well of emotion and applying it to her songwriting, whether she is writing from her own experiences or immersing herself in the melody of emotions in another person’s life.

Performing along with Platt, The Honeycutters are Matt Smith (pedal steel and electric guitars), Kevin Williams (keys/vocals), Rick Cooper (bass/vocals), and Evan Martin (drums/vocals).
