MUSIC TO YOUR EARS: This is Spinal Tap
Jun 5 @ 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm
Asheville Guitar Bar

With special co-host Stephen Goldman, MTYE goes to 11 for a celebration of one of the loudest bands of all time. Discussion, live music, listening, and sing-along. Dress code: none more black!

ABOUT THE DISCUSSION SERIES
Music to Your Ears is Bill Kopp’s monthly discussion series hosted by Asheville Guitar Bar and sponsored by AshevilleFM. On the first Wednesday of each month, music enthusiasts gather to discuss an important album, artist or musical movement. An interactive evening, Music to Your Ears isn’t a lecture; it’s a discussion led by experts and designed to enrich the listening experience. The character of each session is defined by the participants (that’s you). The conversation goes where the attendees take it: the person seated next to you might have attended Woodstock or seen The Beatles in concert. The insights of everyone in the room are what make each and every Music to Your Ears a unique experience.

ABOUT BILL KOPP
With over 500 bylines in Western North Carolina publications (Mountain Xpress, Bold Life, WNC Magazine and more), Asheville-based author and music journalist is an acknowledged expert on popular music. Author of two books – Reinventing Pink Floyd: From Syd Barrett to The Dark Side of the Moon and Disturbing the Peace: 415 Records and the Rise of New Wave – Bill Kopp writes for publications across the country and abroad. A contributing editor at Goldmine Magazine and contributing writer at GRAMMY.com, he has authored more than 30 album liner note essays and conducted more than 1100 interviews. He regularly hosts lecture/discussions on artists and albums of historical importance, and is a frequent guest on music-focused radio programs and podcasts.

Music Movie Mondays: LITTLE RICHARD: I AM EVERYTHING
Jun 10 @ 7:00 pm
Grail Moviehouse

Music Movie Monday Special Screening –

Asheville-based author and music journalist Bill Kopp will be introducing the film and leading a moderated, interactive discussion following the movie.

All tickets are $15 and include General Admission Ticket plus Introduction and Moderated Discussion with Bill Kopp

Sponsored by Asheville FM

LITTLE RICHARD: I AM EVERYTHING tells the story of the Black queer origins of rock n’ roll, exploding the whitewashed canon of American pop music to reveal the innovator – the originator – Richard Penniman. Through a wealth of archive and performance that brings us into Richard’s complicated inner world, the film unspools the icon’s life story with all its switchbacks and contradictions. In interviews with family, musicians, and cutting-edge Black and queer scholars, the film reveals how Richard created an art form for ultimate self-expression, yet what he gave to the world he was never able to give to himself. Throughout his life, Richard careened like a shiny cracked pinball between God, sex and rock n’ roll. The world tried to put him in a box, but Richard was an omni being who contained multitudes – he was unabashedly everything.

Veterans Writing Classes: Brothers and Sisters Like These
Jun 11 @ 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm
East Asheville Public Library

In 2014, a group of Vietnam combat veterans began meeting at the Charles George VA Hospital in Asheville to participate in a unique creative writing program. The focus was capturing their stories through essays and poetry to find the voices war had taken from them. The hope was to reclaim a sense of their shared humanity, build camaraderie and find some degree of healing.

To continue this work, the NC Veterans Writing Alliance Foundation will be offering free creative writing classes at the East Asheville Library in June and July. The goal is to provide healing through the art of creative writing to all veterans in our community.

Join other veterans for this series of classes on Tuesdays at 4:30 p.m. from June 11-July 30 at the East Asheville library. To sign up, please e-mail Ron Toler at [email protected].

Veterans Writing Classes: Brothers and Sisters Like These
Jun 18 @ 4:30 pm – 6:00 pm

Film Screening + Performance: Man Ray’s Return to Reason With a solo performance by Chad Beattie Thursday, June 20, 2024 at 7 PM Black Mountain College Museum + Arts Center {120 College Street} Free and open to all Join us for a screening of Man Ray’s newly restored experimental masterpieces Return to Reason (1923-1929) with a new soundtrack by Jim Jarmusch-Carter Logan combo Sqürl. The evening will begin with a solo performance by the Asheville-based multi-instrumentalist Chad Beattie, followed by a free screening of the films. About Return to Reason: The four films Man Ray directed between 1923 and 1929, Le Retour à la raison, Emak-Bakia, L’Étoile de mer and Les Mystères du Château du Dé represent a high watermark of early European avant-garde cinema, a seminal nexus of experimental technique, surrealist narrative, and playful abstraction as suffused with dark eroticism. In these films Ray began discovering the limitless possibilities of montage as well as the direct application onto celluloid of objects such as salt, pepper, pins, and thumbtacks. Juxtaposing undulating geometric patterns, a twirling fairground ride, and a female nude, among other striking images, Ray finds subconscious correspondences among seemingly incongruous materials and figures. In celebration of the hundredth anniversary of Le Retour à la raison, the Jim Jarmusch-Carter Logan combo Sqürl present Man Ray: Return to Reason, with a newly-recorded drone rock soundtrack for that title as well as the three other Ray films. The band’s cosmic sounds complement Ray’s work by conjuring the beautiful, ineffable, haunting, and sublime. Born Emmanuel Radnitzky in the United States in 1890 to Russian Jewish immigrants, Man Ray is considered a pioneer of the surrealist and Dada movements, with work spanning painting, sculpture, photography, and filmmaking. Disillusioned with conventional art and shaped by the trauma of World War I, along with the emergence of modern media culture, Man Ray and other Dadaists turned to audacious formal experimentation to capture an unreasoning world. Though Man Ray is perhaps best remembered for his striking fashion photography, and the camera-less pictures he called “rayographs”—photograms made by positioning objects directly onto photosensitive material, which he then exposed—his inventive forays into filmmaking are lesser known. In his silent shorts, Man Ray expanded his avant-garde techniques to the realm of moving images, playing with chance and light to fantastic effect. About the performance: Chad Beattie has been making music under the name Yes Selma for the past decade, rummaging through clatter and drones. Since relocating from Baltimore to Asheville in 2021, he has found a distinct voice in the hammered dulcimer, exploring its dynamic range through the repetition of melodic patterns, the reverberation of harmonic phrases – both in his solo work as well as with vibraphonist Adam Lion under their duo, Aperture. Beattie’s latest album Tapioca Daydreams was released in 2023.
