UNC Asheville’s Governors Hall Receives National Award for Design

American School & University magazine recently honored the architectural firm that designed UNC Asheville’s Governors Hall in their November issue. The Walter Robbs Callahan & Pierce Architects design was featured in Architectural Portfolio, a sourcebook devoted entirely to school design and facility planning.

The Architectural Portfolio, a sourcebook for school and university administrators planning new construction or major modernization, featured the Governors Hall design as one of 258 recently completed or planned projects that deserved distinction for having the most exceptional learning environments.

Governors Hall, completed in August 2003, was built to replace three 1967-era residence halls within the existing Governors Village. The design helped increase student comfort, space, and capacity, and features single- and double- occupancy rooms that form a community courtyard. Shared spaces such as classrooms, offices and laundry facilities are arranged on the ground level to animate the courtyard and increase interaction among students, faculty and staff.

Walter Robbs Callahan & Pierce Architects are based out of Winston-Salem, N.C., and have designed educational architecture since 1965.
