McCormick Field Awarded by PETA for Being Vegetarian Friendly

A ballpark can be a reflection of the city it represents and for McCormick Field that means vegetarian options at the concessions stands. This month the world renowned animal rights group PETA announced their list of the Nation�s top vegetarian friendly ballparks and listed McCormick Field amongst them. Asheville received an honorable mention by PETA with vegetarian friendly options such as Morningstar veggie dogs and garden burgers. The Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats and Triple-A Durham Bulls toped the list with grilled Portobello burgers and veggie sausages.

�We know Asheville has a strong base of vegetarian citizens so we try to accommodate that as much as possible,� Tourists Food and Beverage Manager and Centerplate General Manager Brian Candler stated. �Being vegetarian friendly is something that we try to improve on every year. Every type of fan should be able to enjoy the game with either a hot dog or a veggie dog.�

PETA creates a top ten list each season for the best vegetarian friendly ballparks in the majors and minor leagues. The West Virginia Power, another South Atlantic League team was also named on PETA�s top ten. Here is their list of top ten vegetarian friendly ballparks around the minor leagues.

    1. MerchantsAuto.com Stadium (New Hampshire Fisher Cats, Double-A Eastern League)
    2. Durham Bulls Athletic Park ( Durham Bulls Triple-A International League)
    3. PGE Park (Portland Beavers, Triple-A Pacific Coast League)
    4. McCoy Stadium (Pawtucket Red Sox, Triple-A International League
    5. Cheney Stadium (Tacoma Rainiers, Triple-A Pacific Coast League)
    6. AutoZone Park (Memphis Redbirds, Triple-A Pacific Coast League)
    7. Ripken Stadium (Aberdeen IronBirds, Rookie New York Penn League)
    8. Frontier Field (Rochester Red Wings, Triple-A International League)
    9. Harry Grove Stadium (Frederick Keys, Single-A Carolina League
    10. Appalachian Power Park ( West Virginia Power, Single-A South Atlantic League)
Honorable mention on the list include Recreation Park (Visalia Oaks, Single-A California League) and Asheville�s own McCormick Field. The Tourists rank as just one of three Single-A stadiums that made the PETA list and McCormick Field is the oldest stadium to be considered vegetarian friendly.

�Each season we try to improve on our menu items,� Candler stated. If there are any vegetarians that had any veggie suggestions for us, we are certainly open to trying new things.�
