Black Mountain Celebrates Annual Sourwood Festival This Weekend

Black Mountains 31st annual Sourwood Festival will be held August 9 - 10 in downtown Black Mountain. Started in 1977 in tribute to the regions abundant sourwood tree population and the incredibly delicious honey that local honey bees spend their days making the festival now draws over 30,000 people for a weekend of music, honey and bee demonstrations, kids activities, and arts.

Organizers have arranged for many activities to please the entire family. Kids will be entertained in the Childrens Area, where free activities such as face painting, games, and lots of energy-driven activities will all be available for the younger crowd. A rock climbing wall is very popular attraction, as are the giant slide and the moonwalk.

Arts and crafts lovers will enjoy the many vendors who have been invited to participate in the festival. Handmade items from skilled artisans include woodworks, jewelry, pottery, handmade furniture, and much more.

The music tent will be busy all day on Saturday and Sunday with a wide variety of musical styles, including bluegrass, Christian contemporary, folk, and Oldies from the 60s and 70s.

The Sourwood Road Race has become a fixture at the festival, and will be held on Saturday morning. Start/ Finish from the beautiful Cheshire Fitness Club in Black Mountain, NC. The 5k road race will be run on well marked/supervised course. This race is perfect for all competition levels.

The festival is the Black Mountain Chamber of Commerces major fundraising event for the year, and funds the Visitors Center for the entire year. The festival is staffed almost entirely by local volunteers and is a true community effort.

The festival is held in downtown Black Mountain. Parking is limited and is mostly free, although there may be a charge at some lots.
