Remnants of Hurricane Ivan slammed into WNC Thursday, September 16, night with severe winds and heavy rains causing widespread damage and destruction. Tropical Depression Ivan caused downed trees and power lines and significant flooding. Top photo on right, Swannanoa River is shown flooding Biltmore Avenue in the Biltmore Village area on Friday morning, September 17, at 10:30 a.m. Debris Pick Up: City of Asheville street tree crews are stepping up operations to clear brush in the streets throughout the Asheville area. Sanitation crews will follow tree crews to clear roads of debris. The schedule will be adjusted depending on volume of debris encountered. Citizens should move yard brush to the curb for pick up. Crews will be working daily to pick up brush and will adjust collection schedules as needed depending on the amount of yard brush encountered. For information, contact the City of Asheville Public Works Department at 259-5857. Additional photos can be found below of storm damage in the Grove Park area of North Asheville, and of the French Broad River flooding, and of Biltmore Village as it is being flooded by the Swannanoa River. Photos were taken on Friday morning, September 17, between 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. All rivers are now below flood stage effective September 18, 2004.
