Franklin County Wildlife Officer Honored By Top Conservation Group

The National Wild Turkey Federation has recognized Master Officer Philip A. Lucas as North Carolinas Wildlife Law Enforcement Officer of the Year.

Lucas, a Nash County native, has been with the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission for nine years. He is currently stationed in Franklin County.

Philip Lucas has the right combination, said Bryan Perry, vice president of the North Carolina Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation. Hes a top officer, he works hard to protect the resource, he supports youth programs and is an avid hunter. He is a great representative for the Wildlife Commission, the type of person youd want in the field.

The award was presented March 5 during ceremonies at the Dixie Deer Classic, at the Kerr Scott building on the North Carolina State Fairgrounds in Raleigh.

The National Wild Turkey Federation initiated the State Wildlife Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award program in 2000 to highlight the contributions from wildlife officers across the country.

There are more than 200 sworn, full-time wildlife law enforcement officers across North Carolina with arrest authority for state and federal violations. North Carolina wildlife officers enforce game, fish and boating laws to protect the states resources and the safety of its citizens. They can arrest for any criminal offense committed in their presence.

The National Wild Turkey Federation is a nonprofit organization with more than 350,000 members in 50 states, Canada, Mexico and 14 other foreign countries. It supports scientific wildlife management on public, private and corporate lands, as well as wild turkey hunting as a traditional North American sport.
