"An Evening with Dr. Jane Goodall," Distinguished Scientist and Conservationist, Scheduled April 10 in Asheville

Jane Goodall, pictured on right, is one of the most distinguished scientists and conservationists in the world. She has received numerous honors including the Commander of the British Empire (C.B.E.), awarded by Queen Elizabeth at Buckingham Palace in 1995. And just one year after being named a U.N. "Messenger of Peace," Jane Goodall is coming to Asheville as part of a nationwide summit at Warren Wilson College.

"An Evening with Dr. Jane Goodall," a public lecture by the renowned primatologist, will be presented April 10 at 7 PM at the Thomas Wolfe Auditorium in Asheville. Goodall will appear in connection with the Roots & Shoots College Summit - 2003, hosted by Warren Wilson College's Environmental Leadership Center. A book signing will follow the lecture.

Roots and Shoots, founded in 1991, is the Jane Goodall Institute's environmental and humanitarian program for youth (preschool through college). Grounded in Goodall's pioneering study of chimpanzee behavior in Tanzania, the institute has created a worldwide network of people committed to improving life on earth through wildlife research, education, animal welfare and conservation programs.

Goodall began studying primates in 1960 in Tanzania, on Lake Tanganyika's eastern shore, thus marking the beginning of what has become the longest continuous field study of animals in their natural habitat. Five years later, she earned a Ph.D. in ethology at Cambridge University before returning to Tanzania to establish the Gombe Stream Research Centre. Today, Goodall spends about 300 days per year traveling worldwide in order to spread her message of conservation and awareness of the true nature of chimpanzees.

Her books include "In the Shadow of Man," which has been translated into dozens of languages, and the recent bestseller "Reason for Hope," a memoir that explores the spiritual and scientific experiences that have shaped her life. The subject of numerous television documentaries, she is featured in the 2002 large-screen film "Jane Goodall's Wild Chimpanzees," which opened at The Charlotte Observer OMNIMAX Theatre in October.

In a piece entitled "The Power of One," published this past summer in Time magazine in yet another call to action, Goodall wrote: "We have huge power, we of the affluent societies, we who are causing the most environmental damage. For we are the consumers. We do not have to buy products from companies with bad environmental policies.

"I feel deep shame when I look into the eyes of my grandchildren and think how much damage has been done to Planet Earth since I was their age. Each of us must work as hard as we can now to heal the hurts and save what is left."

Ticket prices for the lecture are $50 for a reserved front section of the auditorium, $16 for adults and $8 for children under 12 and for students with ID. Proceeds benefit the Jane Goodall Institute and its programs. Tickets may be purchased at the Asheville Civic Center box office Monday through Friday from 10 AM - 5:30 PM or on Saturdays from 10 AM - 1 PM. They also may be purchased over the phone via credit card by calling (828) 251-5505.
