Neil Simon’s “Fools” at Flat Rock Playhouse, August 24 – September 11

Flat Rock Playhouse, the State Theatre of North Carolina, presents the comedy Fools by Neil Simon August 24 through September 11. The play, which combines an eager young teacher, a beautiful – but dimwitted – girl, a handful of kooky villagers, and an ancient curse, is the amusing recipe for Neil Simon's Fools.

This comic fable takes the audience to Kulyenchikov, a Ukrainian town plagued by a scorned lover's curse. Leon, the unknowing hero, answers an ad requesting a teacher, only to discover that the entire town is under a 200-year-old curse of chronic stupidity. He learns that he has exactly 24 hours to break the curse or else he will become a fool himself. Faced with this dilemma, a hysterical tale of stupidity, love, and human nature unfolds in quintessential Simon style.

Neil Simon has delighted audiences for years on Broadway with over 40 plays. He is known for such comedic gems as The Odd Coupe, Barefoot in the Park, and Lost in Yonkers. His plays have received numerous Tony awards and several of them have been turned into feature films and TV movies, most recently The Goodbye-Girl. Simon has won two Emmys, a Screen Writers Guild Award, and is the only living playwright to have a theatre named after him. Time magazine reported, "If Broadway ever erects a monument to the patron saint of laughter, Neil Simon would have to be it.”

Veteran funny man, Scott Treadway, directs an all-star comedic cast, including Christopher Lynn and Stephen Ware (Adam and Father from Children of Eden), Jake Speck (Forever Plaid), Neela Munoz, Amy Jones, Amanda Treadway, Damian Duke Domingue, Peter Thomasson, and Brian Robinson (John Adams from 1776). CBS TV calls Fools “the brightest, wittiest, happiest show on Broadway in many a day.” Treadway assures audiences, “This show will make you laugh out loud. My side hurts from just watching the cast at our first read-through.” The Waverly Inn and Expressions Restaurant are the Executive Producers for Fools. Tickets are $26 and $24, and can be purchased at the Playhouse box office by calling 828-693-0731. Discounts are available for students, seniors and groups.
