“Forever Plaid” is Forever Entertaining at Flat Rock Playhouse Through November 28

The Flat Rock Play House, The State Theatre of North Carolina, presents “Forever Plaid,” a great 1950s-era story about simpler music and simpler times through November 28, 2004.

Once upon a time, there were four young men (Sparky, Smudge, Jinx and Frankie) who loved to sing. They met in high school, where they joined the audiovisual club, and soon discovered they shared an affection for music and entertaining. Together they dreamed of becoming like their idols- The Four Aces, The Four Lads, The Hi-Los, and The Crew Cuts.

They rehearsed in the basement of Smudge’s family plumbing supply company; it was here they became Forever Plaid – a name that connects the continuation of their values, home, and harmony.

Although rock ‘n’ roll was racing down the fast lane like a candy apple “vette,” the Plaids believed in their music. They sang at family gatherings or fundraisers, and eventually graduated to supermarket openings and proms.

Their first big break finally came when they were booked at the Airport Hilton Cocktail Bar, The Fusel-Lounge. Sadly, fame and fortune were not to be – as they were on their way to pickup their custom-made plaid tuxedoes, they were slammed broadside by a school bus filled with eager teens on their way to see the Beatles US television debut on The Ed Sullivan Show.

Now, through the power of harmony and the expanding holes in the ozone layer in conjunction with the positions of the planets and all that astro-technical stuff, they have been allowed to come back to perform the show they never got to do in life. But it won’t come easy. Each talented Plaid has a flaw, from jittery nerves and indigestion to the inability to tell his left from his right.

Even nerves can’t stop the talent and harmony the Plaids have to share. Performing such songs as “Three Coins in Fountain,” “Lady of Spain,” “Love is a Many Splendored Thing,” and telling stories of their youth, the Plaids will please you and take you back in time to a more innocent era when chaperoned teenagers sought dreamy-eyed romance at the high school prom.
