Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands This Weekend at Asheville Civic Center

The Southern Highland Craft Guild, the prestigious arts and crafts organization that features fine crafts from the mountains of nine Southern states in the Appalachian region, is holding its 55th annual Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands through Sunday, 10 AM-6 PM daily at the Asheville Civic Center in downtown Asheville. Over 170 Guild members will be on display, while a number of them will also be demonstrating their craft work.

"The Guild presents two craft fairs a year, says Janet Wiseman, Director of Education for the Southern Highland Craft Guild. "We welcome the opportunity to showcase our members and their finest work."

Established in 1930, the Southern Highland Craft Guild is one of the oldest and strongest craft organizations in the United States. The Guild has been recognized for over seven decades as an industry leader in promoting crafts of the Southern Highland region.

"The Guild takes pride in the fact that every piece of art we showcase is made by hand," says Ruth Summers, Executive Director of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. "To keep the long standing tradition of excellence, Guild members must be able to create quality artwork on a consistent basis. The Craft Fair of the Southern Highlands will highlight the hard work and dedication that these members put forth."

Guild members who will demonstrate their crafts for this weekend's event include Antonette Cely (dollmaking), Jim Sams (wood carving), Martha Owen (spinning), Anne Freels (cornshuck dollmaking), Rodney Hopkins (wood carving), Bob Owens (wheel thrown pottery), and Bea Hensley (blacksmithing).
