Outdoor and Air Awareness Day at Cradle of Forestry This Saturday

The Cradle of Forestry, Americas first professional school of forestry when it began operation in the late nineteenth century, is now a center for outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds. On Saturday, July 26, the Cradle of Forestry invites visitors to try an outdoor activity maybe mountain biking, a compass course, or a guided walk while learning about air quality in western North Carolina.

Visitors to the Cradle of Forestry are encouraged to bring their mountain bikes and helmets and join in the fun of a guided mountain bike ride at 11 AM.

At 3 PM, the Cradle will offer a Compass Course, and visitors can try their hand at learning how to use this essential (and low-tech) piece of outdoor equipment.

Guided walks on the Biltmore Campus Trail to see the historic cabins from the first forestry school in America will go out at 9:50 AM, 12:50 PM, and again at 3:50 PM. Guided walks on the Forest Festival Trail to see the old logging train and saw mill will go out at 11:20 AM and again at 2:20 PM.

Throughout the day, visitors can learn about Air Awareness and Leave No Trace ethics with several representatives from air quality organizations. Air Awareness activities will start at 10 AM and run throughout the day. Activities will include games, videos, skits, experiments, seminars, and many hands-on activities for all ages. Seminar topics will begin at 1 PM and go until 2:30 PM. Topics will include The Science of Air Quality and SAMI, with Bill Jackson from the US Forest Service, Legislation, with Paul Muller, and Clean Smokestacks and New Source Review, with Andrew Goldberg from MAQC. The Strive Not to Drive organization will also have an exhibit on display during the day.

The Cradle of Forestry is on Highway 276 in the Pisgah National Forest near Brevard (NC). Admission is $5 for adults and $2.50 for youth aged 4-17. Admission includes the events above and the regular activities offered in the center an 18-minute movie, guided walks, living history interpreters, historic cabins, and the Forest Discovery Center with 15 hands-on exhibits, including the scavenger hunt and the fire-fighting helicopter simulator.
