The president of The Citadel, Major General John S. Grinalds, will speak at Asheville School on Thursday, February 10, at 7:15 PM in the schools Graham Theater. As part of a special convocation, Grinalds will present an inspirational message to students, faculty members, and alumni. To reserve a seat, please call 828-254-6345 ext. 4077. Grinalds was appointed the 18th president of The Citadel on August 1, 1997, one year after the historical military college admitted its first female cadets. Since his arrival, he has exhibited a passion for leadership through service and has frequently emphasized the importance of ethics and honor in his speeches. A retired US Marine, Grinalds was born on January 5, 1938, in Baltimore, Maryland, but lived in Macon, Georgia, during most of his childhood. After graduating from the United States Military Academy in 1959, Grinalds continued his education as a Rhodes Scholar and completed his MBA at Harvard Business School with distinction in 1974. While serving two tours of duty in Vietnam, Grinalds was awarded a Silver Star for heroism in combat. Grinalds retired from the United States Marine Corps in 1991 after compiling an impressive military career that included serving on the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and being named to the French Legion of Honor. Upon retirement, Grinalds entered the field of education as the seventh headmaster of Woodberry Forest School, a position he held until he was named president of The Citadel. During the convocation, Asheville School will present Grinalds with an Award of Merit in recognition of a lifetime of achievement and his achievement in education. One of Grinalds four children, Drummund Grinalds, is a 1982 graduate of Asheville School. We are honored to have Major General Grinalds visit our campus and speak to our students, parents, and alumni, said Archibald R. Montgomery IV, Asheville Schools eighth Head of School. His contributions to our country have been so great that we are presenting him with the greatest honor Asheville School can bestow upon a person the Asheville School Award of Merit. His military career, his educational achievements as a boarding school headmaster and a college president, both impressive and inspiring, warrant such recognition. The Southeasts premiere co-ed college preparatory boarding school, Asheville School enrolls approximately 250 students from across the country and overseas. Recent graduates are attending Harvard, Stanford, Columbia, UNC-Chapel-Hill, Davidson, NC State, University of Virginia, Emory, Howard, Northwestern, Duke, and Wake Forest, among others.
