Candler Elementary School was recognized recently for being the recipient of North Carolina's 2006 Exemplary Reading Program Award. The school will be honored next month at the International Reading Association's annual convention in Chicago. The Exemplary Reading Program Award recognizes outstanding reading and language arts programs at all grade levels (elementary, middle, and high school). Its purpose is to call the attention of the public to outstanding programs in schools throughout the United States and Canada. According to the selection committee, Candler Elementary was selected this year's winner because literacy emersion is evident in all corners of the school throughout the day. Recognized as an Honor School of Excellence with high growth, Candler's focus is on the whole child. Academic success results from a caring, supportive and enthusiastic school family. At Candler, instruction begins at 7:20 a.m. with early morning programs to promote literacy. Students participate in reader's theater clubs, Junior Battle of the Books teams, Buddy reading, and computer lab challenge. All of these programs occur before the 7:55 a.m. bell rings. High quality, staff development activities provide certified teachers and paraprofessionals with the knowledge and skills to help students grow as readers and writers. Candler focuses on comprehension strategy instruction, which provides students with the skills they need to think about reading and share their thoughts with others. The school benefits from a comprehensive Title I program which support students through research-based instruction. For more information, visit www.buncombe.k12.nc.us.
