Buncombe County Board of Elections Offers One-Stop Voting Sites

There is almost no plausible excuse for Buncombe Countys 142,811 registered voters to let the November 2 general election come and go without voting this year the Buncombe County Board of Elections has put forth the effort to provide voters with a variety of options, making the voting process easier than it ever has been in years past.

Certainly, many voters will choose to vote the time-honored, old-fashioned way wait until Tuesday, November 2, and cast their votes at their local polling place. But this is a high interest election year. Voter turnout is expected to be particularly heavy this year, and voters should know in advance that Election Boards are requiring voters to sign the registration book when they vote, so lines are likely to be slower than in the past.

Voters who are expecting to be out of town on Election Day, dont have a moment to spare, or simply cannot stand the thought of standing in a long line can take heart the Buncombe County Board of Elections is offering One-stop absentee voting. No excuses, reasons, or explanations are necessary in order to participate One-stop voting is available to all registered voters in Buncombe County.

While One-stop voting has been offered by the Board of Elections in previous elections, new this year are the multiple One-stop voting sites that will be available throughout the county beginning October 14, 2004.

One-stop voting will be available at the following locations:

  • Black Mountain Library (105 N. Dougherty Street, Black Mountain)
  • Enka/Candler Library (1404 Sand Hill Road, Candler)
  • Fairview Library (1 Taylor Road, Fairview)
  • Leicester Library (1561 Alexander Road, Leicester)
  • South Buncombe Library (269 Overlook Road, Asheville)
  • West Asheville Library (924 Haywood Road, Asheville)
  • Weaverville Library (41 N. Main Street, Weaverville)
  • Buncombe County Training Room (199 College Street, Asheville)

One of the many obvious advantages of One-stop absentee voting is that registered voters may vote at any One-stop location in the county voters who live in one part of the county but work in another can simply choose the most convenient location, no questions asked.

Because the One-stop sites will be open beginning October 14, 2004, lines are likely to be much shorter, if they exist at all, than they will be on Election Day.

Over 15,000 Buncombe County registered voters took advantage of absentee voting in the last general election. This figure includes those in the military, people living or traveling out of the area, people who filed standard written requests for absentee forms, and One-stop absentee voters.

Residents who have not registered to vote yet are encouraged to do so at the Board of Elections office at 189 College Street in downtown Asheville, or at any of the many voter registration drives that are scheduled by various civic organizations throughout the county this fall.
