Biltmore Estate at Half Price For Residents of the Carolinas Through March 16

Have you always been meaning to load the kids up in the car and take them to Biltmore Estate? Or maybe treat your spouse or mother to a day at George W. Vanderbilt's 250-room chateau in the mountains of Asheville, NC? If you live in North or South Carolina, now is the time to plan that visit with Carolina Rewards offering daytime admission tickets for residents at half-price. From January 11-March 16, 2003, tickets for residents of the Carolinas are just $18 for adults and $13.50 for youth ages 10-15 while children 9 and under are admitted free with a paid adult. All Twelve-Month and Vanderbilt Passholders, regardless of state of residency, can also purchase up to four discounted tickets with their pass. Reduced price tickets must be used by by March 16, and may be upgraded to Twelve-Month Passes for an additional $30.

The beginning of the year is a wonderful time to visit Biltmore Estate for peace, solitude and stunning winter scenery. The first few months are traditionally a "quiet time" when guests can almost feel as if they have Biltmore House all to themselves. And while the gardens aren't in bloom, Landscape Architect Frederick Law Olmsted (see second photo on right) designed the property to offer beauty year-round with evergreens and ivy highlighting the structure of the gardens. The Conservatory at the bottom of the walled garden is always inviting with its year-round displays of native and exotic plants.

Guests can also enjoy a self-guided tour of Biltmore Estate Winery to learn more about wines crafted on the property. During the winter months, winery guests are invited to join in complimentary Winter Wine Talks. Monday through Friday, red wine barrel tastings are offered at 2 p.m. with guided production tours at 4 p.m. On Saturdays and Sundays, the 2 p.m. barrel tasting is followed by a 4 p.m. red wine and chocolate tasting. And for those looking to experience the great outdoors (see bottom photo), a variety of activities are offered through Explore Biltmore Estate with hiking, biking and even carriage rides.

If you want to treat yourself to Vanderbilt-style graciousness overnight, book a Carolina Rewards package at the Inn on Biltmore Estate. Packages start at $169 per night, midweek and include room, length of stay tickets, valet parking and gratuities for bellman, valet and housekeeper. Other Asheville-area hotel packages starting at $114 are also available. Biltmore Estate is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., except Thanksgiving and Christmas Days.
