Bele Chere Unveils Artwork and Musical Acts for 25th Annual Festival; Bo Diddley & Shelby Lynne Headliners

Surrounded by the beauty of E. W. Grove's 1928 downtown Asheville masterpiece, the Grove Arcade, Bele Chere organizers unveiled this year's poster/t-shirt artwork, and announced some thoughtful changes to the 25th annual Bele Chere festival, slated for July 25-27 in downtown Asheville.

This year's art, the work of local graphic designer Scott Smith of 1250 Design, cleverly features key images from the artwork of each of the previous Bele Chere celebrations. This year's artwork will be available on posters, a number of different t-shirt styles, and embroidered golf shirts. (See photo, right).

Organizers also announced some carefully considered changes to the festival itself. In years past, the festival's main stage has been located in City-County Plaza, while the popular Children's Area has been along the end of College Street. This year, these two popular venues will, in effect, change places, with the main stage (now called the Celebration Stage) moving to the end of College Street, and the Children's Area relocating to City-County Plaza. These changes should provide more space for music lovers to move around during the performances of popular headliners on the Celebration Stage, while City-County Plaza will provide young children and their families a more separate - and shady - location for the younger set to enjoy activities and entertainers that are there just for them. The large expanses of grassy lawns at City-County Plaza will offer families a chance to rest, recharge, and regroup before continuing with their jaunt through Bele Chere's many booths, games, dances, rides, sports opportunities, and special events.

Another big change to Bele Chere will be the location of the ArtsPark, previously located in the parking lot of the Dhrumor Building. This year, ArtsPark and its wide variety of photographers, painters, and sculptors will move to the shaded confines of the Biltmore Avenue parking garage, providing the artists and their patrons with a cooler and more serene venue from which to browse, observe, and enjoy some magnificent exhibitions. The Biltmore Avenue parking garage is about two blocks from the ArtsPark's previous location. While somewhat separate and removed from all of the noise, high energy, and people-watching opportunities that have become time-honored traditions with Bele Chere, the Biltmore Avenue parking garage is still just a short walk away from all of the action.
