A healthy "fast food" option has opened in north Asheville on Merrimon Avenue in the form of the Atlanta Bread Company. Located in the new Edgewood Crossing development at the intersection of Edgewood Road and Merrimon Avenue, the Atlanta Bread Company offers fresh baked breads and baked goods every day. Providing a good value and fast service (three minutes from order to pick-up), along with tasty, healthy food and a relaxing atmosphere is the goal of the new eatery, according to Keith Wright, general manager. The menu features a delicious and wide-ranging selection of sandwiches, soups, salads, baked goods, and gourmet coffees. The sandwich menu contains items such as roast beef, turkey, tuna, and chicken salad as well as a veggie and a chargrilled basil chicken sandwich, among others. Soups change on a daily basis, offering four new selections each day, such as French Onion, Chicken Gumbo, Szechwan Hot & Sour, and Clam Chowder. A vegetarian soup is included as one of the selections each day. A dizzying array of muffins is available (with cinnamon apple, banana nut, mocha chocolate chip, and peaches 'n cream, to name just a few), and specialty items like bear claws, pecan rolls, chocolate �clairs, and chocolate walnut brownies are also baked daily. Gourmet coffee items, such as espresso, cappuccino, and latte are fresh and available all day. Hot breakfast sandwiches (ham and cheese, sausage, egg and cheese, egg and cheese, or bacon, egg and cheese) are served daily on either a bagel or croissant and your choice of cheese. Of course, with a name like the Atlanta Bread Company, this place is all about the bread, and the varieties and quality they offer are delicious. Bread varieties include sourdough, French, sourdough rye, nine grain, asiago cheese, pumpernickel, Italian pesto, honey wheat, cracked wheat, and sundried tomato. All breads are baked daily and are fat-free and preservative-free. Any leftovers at the end of each day are donated to charity. The atmosphere created by the interior design is one of the many things that diners find so inviting about Atlanta Bread Company. The interior features an appealing mix of soft colors, cozy sofas, fireplaces and the expected tables and chairs normally found in restaurants. Classical music also adds to the calm and relaxing atmosphere. The entire business, from employees to interior space, is smoke-free. Owners John and Jill Fisher, along with general manager Keith Wright, firmly believe that a smoke-free operation contributes to its success in a big way, and offers its customers a very enjoyable respite from the aggravations of the day. The no-smoking policy extends even to the patio. Atlanta Bread Company is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Hours are 6:30AM - 9PM on Monday - Thursday, 6:30AM - 10PM on Friday and Saturday, 8AM - 8PM on Sunday. Breakfast is served until 10:30AM on Monday - Friday, and until 2PM on Saturday and Sunday.
