Exciting New Bus Service Now Connects Asheville, Black Mountain, and Hendersonville.

The Asheville Transit System, Young Transportation, and Apple Country Transportation have teamed up to provide area residents with a public transit service that connects both Black Mountain and Hendersonville to anywhere in Asheville that is served by a local bus as well as many important stops along the way. With this new service, area residents who do not have their own private transportation can now conveniently plan trips to the airport, grocery stores, doctor and dentist offices, shopping malls, or whatever activity might be a part of their day.

In response to the widespread interest that was brought to light through the Asheville-Buncombe VISION meetings held last fall, the Asheville Transit System, top photo shows Asheville Transit bus with bike rake on front, began providing service between Black Mountain and Asheville on May 17, 2002. The service is available Monday through Saturday, offering three trips daily between the Asheville Transit Center on Coxe Avenue in downtown Asheville and the Black Mountain Train Depot. The fare is $1 each way. The mid-morning bus leaves the Asheville Transit Center at 11 AM, arrives in Black Mountain at 11:40 AM, leaves Black Mountain for the return trip to Asheville at 11:50 AM, and arrives at the Transit Center at 12:30 PM. The mid-afternoon bus leaves the Transit Center at 3 PM, arriving in Black Mountain at 3:40 PM; the return trip leaves Black Mountain at 3:50 PM, arriving back at the Transit Center at 4:30 PM. The evening run leaves Asheville at 9 PM, arrives in Black Mountain at 9:40 PM, returns from Black Mountain at 9:50 PM, and arrives at the Transit Center at 10:30 PM. The bus makes several stops along its route through Asheville and Highway 70 over to Black Mountain, including Mission-St. Joseph's Hospital System and the Asheville Mall, creating independence for those who previously had to depend on others to provide transportation for such necessary trips as medical appointments or to jobs at the Asheville Mall.

It has now become equally easy to use public transportation between Asheville and Hendersonville. The Asheville-Hendersonville Connection is operated by Young Transportation (see second photo), an Asheville-based, family-owned business that has been in operation since 1939. This service runs Monday through Friday, three times daily, with a one-way fare of $3, and round-trip fare of $5. The bus leaves the Asheville Transit Center and makes stops at the Asheville Airport, the Fletcher Ingles, the Mountain Home Bi-Lo, and completes its run at the Hendersonville Visitors Center in downtown Hendersonville. The same stops are made on the return trip. Time schedules and routes for the Asheville-Hendersonville Connection may be obtained by visiting www.ashevilletransit.com.

One of the obvious benefits of the stop at the airport is that those who either don't have their own transportation or don't want to leave their car in long-term parking at the airport now have ready access to the airport from almost any point from Black Mountain to Asheville to Hendersonville, Edneyville, or Etowah.

On June 11, 2002, Apple Country Transit began operation of two bus routes in Hendersonville. The service includes two new, attractive, air-conditioned buses that seat 20 people each. Buses run Monday through Friday, and a one-way fare is 50 cents. In addition to the two routes within Hendersonville itself (which includes a stop at the new Wal-Mart Super Center), the outlying communities of Edneyville and Etowah have "feeder" service into Hendersonville from their areas. Apple Country Transit also works in conjunction with Young Transportation to provide convenient scheduling for connections to the Asheville-Hendersonville Connection.
