Peter Loewer Presents Program on 18th Century British Naturalist January 20

Award-winning author and illustrator Peter Loewer will present a slide lecture on 18th century British naturalist Mark Catesby (see selection to the right and below) on Thursday, January 20, from 2-4 PM at The North Carolina Arboretum's Visitor Education Center.

Loewer's lecture, exploring Catesby's varied subjects and their importance as individual art, historic record, and scientific illustration, will be of interest to art lovers, naturalists, and historians alike.

The ambitious and adventuresome Catesby made two lengthy trips to the New World between 1712 and 1726, initially to collect botanical samples for his wealthy sponsors. His interest soon turned to sketching the birds, plants, and animals he saw on his wanderings throughout rural Southeastern America.

In 1747, Catesby published "National History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands," the exhaustive record of decades of work. Considered America's first true naturalist, Catesby's novel placement of birds and animals in their natural habitats became a style of natural history representation that was later used by such artists as Alexander Wilson and John James Audubon.

Known throughout the US for his illustrations, Loewer is a sought-after speaker and teacher in areas of botanical illustration, garden design, travel, and plants. For years, his elegant artwork has illustrated books and magazines. He writes, teaches, and lectures extensively. In addition to these commitments, Loewer's work includes writing for Carolina Gardener magazine, contributing to the monthly garden program on David Hurand's "Conversations" on WCQS-FM, and maintaining a gardening website "The Wild Gardener."

The program fee is $9 for Arboretum Society members and $12 for the public. Paid, pre-registration is required. To register, or for more information, please call 828-665-2492 or visit www.ncarboretum.org .
