The North Carolina Arboretum and the Buncombe County Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners will host the "Focus on Flowers" Symposium on Saturday, July 30, from 9 AM 4:30 PM at the Arboretum's Visitor Education Center. The annual gardening symposium's theme this year, All About the Mixed Border, will feature excellence in garden and floral design. What better way to spend a summer day than celebrating our favorite plants and cultivating new ideas for the landscape. The morning's keynote address will be All About the Mixed Border: Let's Mix it Up! , featuring Pam Beck, who will also conduct an afternoon program on flowers and spirituality. Beck is a frequent lecturer, photographer, and garden writer who regularly publishes in Carolina Gardener magazine and is a local garden scout for Better Homes & Gardens magazine. She serves on the Board of Advisors of the JC Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh, NC. A second morning presentation will feature a floral demonstration by local designer Becky Lance. Concurrent afternoon workshops will be presented by Clara Curtis, NC Arboretum Associate Director for Design, on container gardening; Mary Ann Willingham, Asheville Blue Ridge Rose Society, on roses; Peter Loewer, well-known artist and author, on ornamental grasses; Allen Haas, Carolinas Dahlia Society, on dahlias, and Sylvia Elwyn, Master Gardener, on perennials. New this year, the Buncombe County Master Gardeners will be hosting a plant sale. There will also be special books and a wide range of garden tools available in the Garden Trellis gift shop. The symposium is $40 for Arboretum Society members and Buncombe County Master Gardeners; $46 for the general public. The fee includes all materials, light snacks, lunch (vegetarian option available) and parking. Paid, pre-registration by the July 25 deadline is required as attendance is limited. Participants will list workshop preferences upon registration. To register, or for more information, please contact the Arboretum at 828-665-2492 or visit their web site, www.ncarboretum.org. The mission of The North Carolina Arboretum is to cultivate connections between people and plants. (Images provied by the NC Arboretum.)
