58th Annual North Carolina Apple Festival September 3 - 6


The North Carolina Apple Festival, celebrated annually in Hendersonville over the Labor Day weekend, will be held September 3-6, 2004. With good health always a central focus for this national favorite, this year�s theme is �North Carolina Apples � Eat More in 2004.� Numerous family-oriented events, from concerts to cooking contests to bike races, will be held throughout the 4-day festival.

The festival�s official opening ceremony will be held Friday, September 3, at 10 AM at Hendersonville�s historic courthouse on the corner of Main Street and First Avenue.

Got an apple recipe that you know is a sure winner? Then you might want to let it shine by entering the Apple Recipe Contest that will be held on Friday, September 3, from 8:30 AM-12:30 PM, at First Citizens Bank Plaza, on the corner of Main Street and Sixth Avenue. This event is sponsored by the NC Cooperative Extension Service; please call 828-697-4891 for more information.

Take a close look at some of Henderson County�s beautiful apple orchards on the Apple Orchard Tour on Friday, September 3, from 9AM-12:30 PM. This is a �one time only� opportunity during the festival, and is sponsored by the NC Cooperative Extension Service. Tickets are $4 each, and the tour will leave from the Extension Service parking lot at 740 Glover Street; call 828-697-4891 for information or tickets.

Many of downtown Hendersonville�s merchants participate in the Apple Festival�s Sidewalk Sale. Look for special sales and merchandise each day of the festival.

The NC Air Museum will host an open house for the entire run of the festival, from 10 AM � 6 PM daily. The Air Museum, which displays vintage aircraft and memorabilia, is located on Gilbert Street near the Hendersonville Airport. Admission is free.

For a real taste of what the Apple Festival has to offer, try meandering through the Street Fair area. The Apple Festival Street Fair will be open each day during the festival, from Sixth Avenue to Caswell Street, 10 AM � 8 PM (Monday hours are 10AM-5PM, from Second Avenue to Caswell Street). The streets will be overflowing with arts and crafts booths, food vendors, local non-profits, and area apple growers.

The Hendersonville Lion�s Club is sponsoring its annual Big Apple Breakfast on Saturday, September 4, from 7-10 AM. For more information on this huge, full-course breakfast, please call 828-698-5312 (evenings only).

Attention all walkers and runners � Pardee Hospital will host an 8K race and a one-mile Family Fun Walk on Saturday, September 4, at 8AM. Race day registration will begin at 7AM. The race fee is $15 for pre-registration, $20 on race day. The race starts and finishes at Pardee�s medical office building. For more information, please call 828-694-7700.

A family favorite will be back this year, the Apple Country Bike Tour. This marks the 18th year for the popular event. The tour will be held on Sunday, September 5, beginning at 8:30 AM; registration will begin at 7:45 AM. Participants should gather at Atkinson Elementary, 2510 Old Kanuga Road. Fee is $20 for adults, $5 for children (same day registration is $25). Please call 828-692-0385 for more information or registration.

The final day of the Apple Festival features the King Apple Parade, sponsored by Carolina First Bank. The parade will begin at 2:30 PM on Monday, September 6. The parade will follow a route from Five Points on Main Street to Caswell Street. Be sure to show up early on the parade route to see the antique airplane fly-over and the Children�s Parade. The festivities will conclude on Monday, September 6 (Labor Day) with the huge and popular Apple Festival Street Dance, from 7 � 9 PM. The Street Dance will be held on Main Street between Fourth and Fifth Avenues. The dance features square dancing, clogging, and exhibition dancing. Bring your own lawn chairs. The Street Dance is the perfect end to a great festival weekend. Come on by for some good ol� mountain fun. Call the Greater Hendersonville Chamber of Commerce at 828-692-1413 for more information.
