APD Officer graduates from Hazardous Devices School


The Asheville Police Department is pleased to announce that Lt. Mike Yelton has successfully completed the course requirements for certification to become a civilian bomb technician and graduated from the Hazardous Devices School in Huntsville, Alabama.

The school, located on the grounds of Redstone Arsenal, is a six week course designed to certify civilian bomb technicians for the nation�s over 450 accredited bomb squads. The course of study includes explosives recognition, x-ray interpretation, electronics, and basic render safe protocols for improvised explosive devices and commercial explosives.

Lt. Yelton becomes just the fourth officer from the Asheville Police Department to attain this certification since the squad was formed in 1999, and joins Lt. Wallace Welch and Det. Tony Johnson in providing this service not only to the City of Asheville but also to many surrounding communities in the WNC region.

The APD Bomb Squad is accredited by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the U.S. Department of Justice.
