Downtown After Five, Ashevilles popular free outdoor summer concert series, is already back for another season of live music and rockin good times at Pack Square in downtown Asheville. The concerts are a big hit with Asheville residents as well as visitors, and large, smiling, dancing crowds are all part of the scene on the Square, with live music, food, soft drinks, and beer all on hand. People of all ages are likely to be in attendance, drawn by the terrific bands and the upbeat atmosphere. The Asheville Downtown Association, a non-profit organization that promotes the betterment of downtown Asheville, sponsors the concert series, which is held the third Friday of each month, through September. Local vendors are on site to handle the demand for food, drink, and fun, although there are many great restaurants in the immediate Pack Square neighborhood for anyone who wants to take a break from the music and the crowd. The Kids Corner will offer face painting and crafts for children. This is an informal, carefree outdoor event that is suitable for the whole family. Buncombe Turnpike will be the center of attention at the September 19 season finale concert when this traditional bluegrass band thrills the crowd with the mellow sound of mandolin, bass, harmonica, and sensational vocals. The festivities begin at 5PM and continue until 10PM. For more information about the series, please call the Asheville Downtown Association at 828-251-9973.
