“A Few Good Men” Opens at Asheville Community Theatre March 4

Can you handle the truth? Next up at Asheville Community Theatre is the hard-hitting drama, A Few Good Men, the story of two Marines on trial for complicity in the death of a fellow Marine at Guantanamo Bay.

Opening on Friday, March 4, at 8 PM, the play runs for three weekends through March 20. Performances are held on Friday and Saturday nights at 8 PM and Sunday afternoons at 2:30 PM.

This Broadway hit by Aaron Sorkin sizzles on stage. The story was made into a popular movie by the same name starring Tom Cruise as Kaffee, the Navy lawyer assigned to defend two Marines on trial for the murder of one of their platoon members. Lt.j.g. Daniel Kaffee, a callow young man more interested in softball games than the case, expects a plea-bargain and a cover-up of what really happened. Prodded by a female member of his defense team, Kaffee eventually makes a valiant effort to defend his clients and, in doing so, puts the military mentality, the Marine mentality, and the Marine code of honor on trial.

A Few Good Men transcends the specific incident at Guantanamo Bay and illuminates important questions of responsibility and culpability in the military system. With the trials currently underway for the Abu Ghraib Prison scandals, it is ironic that once again, this story is playing out in the military. A Few Good Men examines power and the abuse of power in a branch of the military known for its code - Unit, Corp, God, and Country. This production contains graphic language.

Mounted by ACT with a strong cast of 20 including 19 men and one woman, A Few Good Men stars ACT newcomers Raphael Siary as Lt.j.g. Kaffee, Adam Mills as Lt.j.g. Sam Weinberg, Heather Johnson as Lt. Cmdr. Joanne Galloway, Norman Graham as Lt. Col. Nathan Jessup, Jerry Terhorst as Pfc Louden Downey, and Colin Lasley as Lance Corporal Harold Dawson. The production also features veteran actors David Ely, Michael Bigham, and Kent Smith, as well as the debut performance of local attorney Jack Cloninger.

A Few Good Men is being directed by G. Leslie Muchmore who has recently relocated to Asheville. Muchmore brings a strong military and theatrical background to this production. He has directed many productions, served as the Artistic Director of the Virginia Shakespeare Festival for 7 years, served as the Co-founder and Artistic Director of Summer Shakespeare at Villanova for 4 years, and has taught university level theatre classes from 1973-1990 (at the College of William and Mary and Villanova University). His educational background includes a BS from Montana State University, a MA from the University of Arizona, and a Ph.D from Stanford University.

Tickets are $17 for adults and $10. Box office hours are noon - 4 pm, Monday-Friday. For more information please call 828-254-1320. Asheville Community Theatre is located at 35 East Walnut Street in downtown Asheville.
