Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity Refreshes Annual ReStore ReUse Contest

A local ReStore ReUse Contest has been hosted by Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity for more than a decade and has seen hundreds of creative entries ranging from small housewares to entire homes.

This year’s contest, structured a little differently than previous years, is now open and accepting submissions until September 30th. Winners will be announced by the end of October. Visit ashevillehabitat.org/reuse-contest for guidelines and entry form.

A small panel of three judges will choose Best in Show, and the rest of the winners will be selected by the community. In October, the public will be able to vote for their favorites in the following categories:

  • Art
  • Furniture& Home Decor
  • Dwelling (plant, animal or human space)

This is a great opportunity for creative types to demonstrate their re-use talent and inspire others. Gorgeous garden art, fantastic furniture make-over, or inspired interior, if your recent DIY project was made of predominantly reused building materials, be sure to enter it in the ReStore ReUse Contest.

Need inspiration? See photos from 2023. Past projects have included: tabletop lamps made from glass insulators, planters created from bi-fold closet doors, unique wall art fashioned from kitchen utensils, a happy hen house made from a hutch, a headboard that was once a room divider, and much more.

“In a world increasingly dominated by algorithms and A.I., the ReUse Contest keeps it local, spontaneous, and human! We love seeing the inspired ideas our community showcases, and the way donated materials are creatively repurposed into art. You never know what you may find in the ReStore…and every year we’re amazed to see what you do with your finds,” shared Asheville ReStore Manager Scott Bianchi.
