The Special Olympics are back in Buncombe County and hundreds of athletes are ready to represent their schools and programs.
The Special Olympics Spring Games will be held on Thursday, May 4, 2023 at TC Roberson Football Stadium starting at 9:00 am until 1 pm. Buncombe County athletes, ages 8 years and older, will compete and show their skills in various events throughout the day. Events include traditional track and field events, wheelchair events and developmental events.
The annual Spring Games is a large event that draws around 500 athletes and 1,000 volunteers to showcase the comradery and competitive talents of area Special Olympic athletes and it is the first Special Olympics Games in Buncombe County since the COVID-19 pandemic. Mac Stanley, local coordinator for the event, says, “We are excited to get Special Olympics up and running again after COVID-19. It will truly be a bright spot in our programming and we look forward to cheering for our Buncombe County athletes.”
Like any local athlete, Special Olympics athletes need to hear the cheers and encouragement of their fans. This year, organizers are pleased to announce that all volunteer roles have been filled, but fans are still needed! The local community is invited to the Spring Games to recognize and celebrate the achievements of the athletes. The Spring Games are possible through generous donors and special fundraising events throughout the year, with heavy support from Buncombe County Parks & Recreation, Buncombe County Schools and Chick-fil-A.
Come join the community on May 4th for a fantastic athletic event! For more information, contact Special Olympics Buncombe County at (828) 250-4265 or email [email protected]. More information can be found here.
