During the recent Teacher Appreciation Week, West Buncombe Elementary School’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) let teachers know they are loved and supported!
PTO and staff members dressed up and held encouraging signs as teachers took a quick break from their BCS Virtual Days online classes to pick up some delicious Chick-fil-A lunches in a “drive-thru” fashion at the front of the school on Tuesday.
“It’s a socially distant way to show our appreciation,” said PTO President Casey Slate. “We wish we could do our normal weeklong event where we do something special for teachers every day, but we’re making do under the circumstances. We really want to recognize the teachers and staff for the hard work they do all year for our students. Now, when teachers are working from home and missing their face-to-face time with students, we’re wearing silly costumes to lift their spirits and put smiles on their faces.”
The goodie bags included a Chick-fil-A box lunch, a gift card, and a bag of Chex Mix. West Buncombe Principal Brian Chandler dressed up as “Daddy Eagle,” and his son, first-grader Quillen Chandler, dressed up as a “baby eagle.” Other staff members wore dinosaur costumes and funny hats.
“It’s tough being at home, because we love our kids so much,” Mr. Chandler said. “Normally, we have a big staff lunch. I get to serve it with the PTO, and it makes everyone feel loved and appreciated. It’s my favorite day of the school year. Even more, now, with the teachers not being able to see each other and their kids, we thought they needed a little pick-me-up.”
