Information
The Asheville Art Museum is pleased to announce its free Community Day celebrating The Art of Food: From the Collections of Jordan D. Schnitzer and His Family Foundation. The event will take place on Saturday, September 2, from noon to 5 pm, and visitors can enjoy an afternoon of creativity and community engagement featuring programs that explore how food and culture inform one another.

The event features tours of The Art of Food exhibition throughout the day and a drop-in style Makerspace: Painting with Spices led by local artist Aspen Johnston. Visitors of all ages and abilities can learn how to transform spices into an artist’s pallet and paint using scents, textures, and colors.

In the Museum’s Plaza, visitors can relax and unwind with a coloring activity inspired by still life paintings and objects from the Museum’s Collection. Additionally, participate in a free recipe exchange in English and Spanish in collaboration with Growing Minds (Appalachian Sustainable Agriculture Project). Cecilia’s Kitchen food truck will be stationed outside for guests to enjoy delicious food and beverages for purchase. Industrial Coffee Pot will perform their creative fusion of jazz, soul, funk and pop music on the Museum’s rooftop terrace, next to Perspective Café.

To further accentuate the event, Sarah Harts, communication manager of ASAP, will moderate a lively panel discussion with farmer Malcolm Banks and local chefs about the meaning of Appalachian Foodways. Asheville Art Museum is also partnering with Manna Food Bank to host a food drive. Visitors and community members are invited to donate non-perishable items and hygienic products on the day of the event and through the end of October.
