The Hall Fletcher Elementary Garden will be hosting the third annual “Star Chef Junior Cook Off” series for their fourth grade students this upcoming Friday, March 4th, at 9:15 am and at 12:00 pm.
The students will plan, prepare for, and help to run their own garden-harvested, vegetarian, and science-based cooking competition.
This year, several local chefs, including Elliott Moss of Buxton Hall, Suzy Phillips of Gypsy Queen Cuisine, Laura Telford of Biltmore Coffee Traders, and Neiman Beadle of TacoBilly will be on hand as celebrity judges and fiscal sponsors of the garden and nutrition program.
The annual “Star Chef Junior” Cook-off and the FEAST garden program are part of an innovative approach to interactive, project-based learning experiences for Hall Fletcher’s K-6 students, focusing on organic gardening skills, environmental science, nutrition and stewardship.
Approximately 70% of Hall Fletcher Elementary’s students receive free or reduced-cost lunch. Studies show that children living in poverty face the greatest health risks, making garden and nutrition education an important health and wellness intervention for this vulnerable population of students.
