Take the Stage (or the Seats) in Belk Theatre This Spring

Perhaps you’ve always dreamed of being on the stage. Or maybe you’re looking for an entertainment experience that doesn’t involve a TV or computer screen.

Whether you’re under the lights or in the seats, Belk Theatre offers the theatrical excitement you’re looking for on campus this spring.

The first spring production will be Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 25-27 and at 2 p.m. on Feb. 28. This unique play is a documentary-style presentation created from interviews of over two hundred people who experienced the Los Angeles Riots in the aftermath of the Rodney King trial verdict in 1992. Author Anna Deavere Smith spent nine months interviewing those who had experienced the devastating event in order to create this performance.

Students in NEH Distinguished Professor of Classics Sophie Mills’ class worked hard creating a brand new translation of Euripides most famous play, which they’ve entitled The Bacchae Transformed. This Greek play was often performed during the Festival of Dionysus and is an exciting tale of death and destruction, as well as the conflicts within families and between humans and their gods. The play will be performed at 7:30 p.m. on April 14-16 and at 2 p.m. on April 17.

If you’re ready to experience theater from the other side of the curtain, students, faculty and staff who are acting novices or experienced thespians are invited to attend open auditions from 7-10 p.m. on Jan. 13 and 14 in Belk Theatre for both spring productions. Group auditions will take place in 45-minute blocks, and will include improvisation exercises and cold readings from the scripts. Auditions for The Bacchae Transformed will also include sample songs and choreography.
