Cataloochee Ski Area joined other resorts across the country this past weekend as they officially opened for the 2015-16 season. The area has been making snow around the clock since Friday, November 13th.
The opening day was a little late by Cataloochee standards, as they opened November 2nd last year, skiing a total of 141 days. Cataloochee’s continued dedication to snowmaking has allowed them to be consistently among the first areas in the country to open each season, averaging 127 days of skiing and riding each winter. Located high in the mountains of Western North Carolina, they are a snowsports playground to many in the Southeast.
Each year, Cataloochee continues to make significant improvements to its snowmaking infrastructure allowing the resort’s operational staff to be aggressive in helping skiers and snowboarders with their first tracks of the season. “Staying current with advances in the industry has enabled us to make snow more effectively in the early season. This allows us to open earlier each year as the weather cooperates.” says Chris Bates, Cataloochee’s Vice-President and General Manager.
