Haw Creek Teacher a Finalist for National Award

Haw Creek Elementary Teacher Meredith Stanley is one of three state finalists competing for the national Presidential Award in Mathematics. Stanley was also a finalist in 2012.

“To be a state finalist for the Presidential Award in mathematics is a great honor, and I am thrilled to represent our state’s mathematics teachers and curriculum,” said Stanley. Every day in the classroom I aim to teach students to be persevering problem solvers, a skill that will benefit them far beyond the elementary school mathematics classroom. By providing a climate where students are not afraid to take academic risks, I get to experience the true pleasure of witnessing students gain mathematic confidence as they work through problems, engage with each other’s ideas, and learn to articulate and support their problem solving strategies.”
The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) are the highest honors bestowed by the United States government specifically for K-12 mathematics and science (including computer science) teaching.

Awards are given to mathematics and science (including computer science) teachers from each of the 50 states and four U.S. jurisdictions, and it recognizes those teachers who develop and implement a high-quality instructional program that is informed by content knowledge and enhances student learning.

Awardees serve as models for their colleagues, and also as leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science (including computer science) education. The National Science Foundation administers PAEMST on behalf of The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.
