Like many other local businesses, Asheville’s only professional theatre, North Carolina Stage Company, closed unexpectedly and indefinitely on September 27, 2024.
Only two weeks away from opening our 22nd season, and with actors deep in rehearsals and a set nearly completely built, the theatre doors were closed due to major utility outages in the downtown area. While the damage the building sustained from the storm was small, the lack of water, phone or internet service forced the complete cancellation of the first show of the 2024-25 season.
Now, over a month later, NC Stage is finally ready to reopen (albeit, with bottled water) with a true story of our shared humanity and peace on earth, All is Calm: the Christmas Truce of 1914 by Peter Rothstein. The Western Front, Christmas, 1914. Out of the violence a silence, then a song. A German soldier steps into No Man’s Land singing “Stille Nacht.” Thus begins an extraordinary time of camaraderie, music, and peace. A remarkable true story, told in the words and songs of the men who lived it. This emotional, historical Christmas story is one of our most requested shows and is perfect for families visiting for the holidays.
The show will run November 29 through December 22 and feature a trio of actors known and new to NC Stage: Adam Kampouris, Steve McConnell, and Willie Repoley as well as an eight member choir.
Hurricane Helene has left our community struggling with different levels of recovery, grief, hope and determination. To make things as accessible to as many people as possible, after November 11, ticket pricing for this show will be offered on a sliding scale. We ask that theatergoers consider what works for them right now and make that selection. Audiences are the heart of the theatre and NC Stage looks forward to sharing the remarkable history, music, and peace of All is Calm this holiday season.
NC Stage remains incredibly grateful for the recovery and rescue crews, utility workers, first responders, and volunteer organizations that have helped make such great strides towards restoration as we continue to respond to this unprecedented event. Complimentary tickets are available for these workers as a small thanks for their incredible effort.
