The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction has evacuated more than 800 offenders from another two prisons in storm-stricken western North Carolina.
NCDAC relocated offenders from Mountain View Correctional Institution in Spruce Pine and from Craggy Correctional Center in Asheville. As with other recent evacuations, the action was necessary due to long timeframes for expected restoration of water and power service.
Today’s operation moved 248 men from Craggy Correctional Center to Alexander Correctional Institution in Taylorsville and 557 men from Mountain View Correctional Institution to six prisons in central and eastern North Carolina:
- Granville Correctional Institution, Butner
- Maury Correctional Institution, Maury
- Neuse Correctional Institution, Goldsboro
- Pender Correctional Institution, Burgaw
- Warren Correctional Institution, Manson
- Pamlico Correctional Institution, Bayboro.
All offenders are safe, and NCDAC is taking appropriate steps to ensure continued health and safety of all staff and offenders. Relocated offenders can make phone calls after they arrive at their destinations. Family and friends are asked not to call the prisons to check on a loved one.
This week, NCDAC has evacuated more than 2,000 people from five western NC prisons. On Monday, 405 women were moved from Western Correctional Center for Women in Swannanoa and from Black Mountain Substance Abuse Treatment Center for Women. On Tuesday, 841 men were relocated from Avery-Mitchell Correctional Institution in Spruce Pine.
The online Offender Locator will be updated within 24 hours to indicate where individual offenders are temporarily rehoused. The duration of the relocations will depend on the time required complete utility repairs.
