The Haywood County Sheriff’s Office’s Criminal Investigation Division is working to find who is behind several mail thefts that occurred within a week’s time in the county.
The majority of the incidents (more than 30 total) occurred in the North Canton area, but the Crabtree area was affected by this activity, too.
Law enforcement learned about the thefts after a citizen contacted the office, reporting mail strewn along the road in the area of Clark Cemetery off Crabtree Mountain Road.
Law enforcement was able to make contact with several residents to return the mail found along various roads in Canton. However, several packages were cut open/emptied. In addition to gift packages being stolen, gift cards, checks and prescription medications were also noted as missing.
Haywood County Sheriff’s Office detectives ask that Haywood County citizens remain vigilant during this exciting, yet busy time of year.
“So many people are in ‘go mode’ as they plan for Christmas,” said Sheriff Greg Christopher. “It is easy to get lost in a to-do list, but please remember to keep your own safety and security in check. A way you can do this is to check your mail box promptly when the normal mail delivery time comes around- do not let several days go by before checking your mailbox. Let close neighbors and friends know when you will be away so they can keep an eye out on your home.”
