Smith McDowell House Hosts History Theme Parties

The Smith-McDowell House Museum is continuing its series of Historic Parties for boys and girls 7 and up. This series is a hands on program bringing American history to life. Each party features historical or cultural themes from various historic time periods in American history. Dress code depends on the activities and programs in the Historical Series. The Tea parties are designed for girls ages 7 and up, although some parties will have activities that will interest both boys and girls. The parties will include a brief lesson, snacks, tea and a craft activity.

On August 23, 2008 the Museum will host a Civil War Party for Boys and Girls. The children will learn about Civil War lifestyles, music and the slaves’ struggle for freedom. The American Girl Doll Addie is a girl who escapes slavery with her mother in 1884. Also featured are fictional characters from the Dear America Series and My America Series from Scholastic Books. Dress code will be summer casual as some activities will take place outside. The refreshments will feature lemonade, sandwiches and cookies and the craft activity will be making a wall-paper covered box or a soldier’s journal.

Upcoming Tea Parties and activities at the Smith-McDowell House Museum are as follows:

  • September 13th: World War Two Party for Boys and Girls. Dress code will be casual dressy. The program is a hands-on activity dealing with rationing and the refreshments will feature recipes from the time period.
  • November 8th: Native American Tea – Dress code is casual dressy. Author Janet Shaw comes again to share her character, Kaya from the American Girl Series. Refreshments will include Native American favorites.
  • Parties for 2009 are currently being scheduled.
The party will begin at 11:00am and will last approximately two hours. A second program at 3 pm will be added only if the first program completely sells out and we reach a 12 person minimum. A tour of the Smith-McDowell House is included in the cost of the party. The admission fee for a Historic Party is $25 for an adult and $20 for children ages 7 to 12. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Please make reservations with the Smith-McDowell House Museum at least one week prior to program desired.
