RiverLink and Cane Creek Middle School Get Their Feet Wet

This Monday and Tuesday RiverLink joined the eighth graders of Cane Creek Middle in studying their namesake Cane Creek. Throughout the month of October the school has been acquainting the eighth graders with their creek through "Creek Week" lessons. Over the span of the two days Riverlink educators worked with the science staff in leading lessons on stream conditions and characteristics and stream macro-invertebrates for about 120 students.

The students literally got their feet wet while collecting macro-invertebrates and making measurements and observations on the state of their stream. They netted insects that live in the creek and identified them. These macro-invertebrates can be good indicators of stream health and by identifying which critters live in their creek they can make some projections on its health. The students also collected data on physical characteristics of the stream such as velocity, width and depth, temperature, and turbidity. Lastly, they were asked to make visual observations on the plant community, evidence of animals, litter, and water quality in and around the creek. All of the data collected is going to aid the students in making a more educated conclusion on the state of their stream.

Despite the chilly water, Cane Creek Middle School's eighth graders did a great job studying their creek and the RiverLink educators felt lucky to assist them in their investigations.
