Twenty-one Buncombe County fourth graders from Emma Elementary School were treated to a three course meal at Olive Garden on Tunnel Road recently. The students attending the luncheon are members of the class that raised the most money for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Pasta program at Emma.
The class’ teacher Suzanne Bigsby states, “I’m very proud of the students in my class and their ability to think about the needs of others. During the two weeks of the fundraiser, my students brought in more than $250 in change, and most of that money came from piggy banks.” This is the first year that Emma Elementary has participated in the Pennies for Pasta program. The school’s original goal was $1000, but through the enthusiastic response of the students, the school was able to donate more than $2200. Shirley Humphrey, school counselor who coordinated the project, adds, “I had been looking for a project that would help our students think about community service and the diverse ways they can be involved in helping others. The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Pasta program provided just such an opportunity. Through the video and flyers provided by the Society, our students learned about leukemia and lymphoma as well as their treatments and research aimed at finding cures for them.” Many of the students had never been to a restaurant like Olive Garden, so the class studied table manners and general etiquette before coming to the restaurant. The students began their meal with bread and salad. The main course was spaghetti with marinara sauce, and for dessert, each student was served vanilla ice cream with a choice of toppings.
