Explore the Soul of Stone in Sculpture and Landscape Design at The NC Arboretum This Fall

“Set in stone” takes on new meaning during two unique educational programs at The NC Arboretum this fall.

Internationally known stone sculptor and artist DJ Garrity will offer “Sculpture: The Soul of Hardscape” on October 23 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. This exclusive lecture explores the unique qualities that three-dimensional art brings to a landscape, as well as the often dramatic effects of the human vestige upon and within hardscape design.

Garrity is well known as a sculptor, painter and journeyman along the margins of abstract expression. His world is one of long vistas and boundless horizons from the Badlands of South Dakota, to the windswept edge of Western Europe. The expressive influence of place and a deep empathy with the nuances of the human condition are signatory in his work and elicit an intuitive sense of unrestrained eloquence, a narrative of form, color and emotion.

Garrity teaches from coast to coast at institutions such as Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota, the Chicago Botanic Garden, and Blithewold Mansion and Gardens in Newport, Rhode Island.

The cost to attend the lecture is $11 for members and $14 for the public.

On November 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Arboretum welcomes Asheville’s Marc Archambault for a special presentation: “Stone in the Yard: Appreciating and Understanding Stonework in the Landscape.”

Start thinking about next year’s garden and learn about the principles of stonework design and construction.  The morning presentation will focus on the applications of making strong and beautiful walls, paths, accents and benches. After lunch, the class will take a short walking tour of stonework at the Arboretum.

Owner of Hammerhead Stoneworks, a small quality-driven masonry and dry stone walling company in Asheville, Archambault is known for his creative designs and meticulously crafted stonework.

The cost to attend is $12 for members and $16 for the public.
