Buncombe County and Asheville Hub Provide Funds to ABSCC

The ABSCC is an initiative of the Asheville Hub, a regional alliance of community leaders oriented toward advocacy, the future and a cutting-edge vision of shared community leadership. The community action plan for sustainability that the ABSCC is developing will build upon local and national best practices, as well as the region’s core strengths. It will analyze key community “quality of life” indicators and propose innovative new solutions to local sustainability issues and future climate change impacts.

“Communities in Europe and on the West Coast have been engaged in comprehensive sustainability planning for some time,” said Michael Leahey, a management consultant who is serving as the sustainability coordinator for the ABSCC. “We will take the best attributes of their plans and combine them with our own solutions to create a community action plan whose impact will stretch beyond Asheville and Buncombe County into the surrounding watershed region (Madison, Haywood, Henderson and Transylvania counties), and ultimately into all of Western North Carolina.”

ABSCC’s intent is to unify local grassroots efforts with the scientific expertise and data of the National Climatic Data Center to create a unique, world-class community action plan. The plan will integrate local action plans with community-building and local digital media expertise, and the result will be a web-based portal that will enhance communication, synergize actions, and inform local residents.

“We will not produce a report that will sit on a shelf gathering dust,” said Leahey. “We want a real-time action plan with community buy-in that will deliver solutions and benefits for our region.”
