A-B Tech Student to Compete for Miss International Title in July

Melissa Chambers, Associate in Arts student, was crowned Miss North Carolina International during a ceremony in April. She will compete for the title of Miss International in July in Chicago.

Melissa Chambers, a recent A-B Tech graduate, was crowned Miss North Carolina International, with a chance to complete on the international level in July.

Chambers, who has been competing in pageants for almost two years, was crowned Miss Weaverville before she went to the statewide competition. "This is more of a conservative pageant than others. There is no swimsuit competition, instead we model fitness wear. The interview is a big portion," Chambers said.

The interview competition is valued at 40 percent of the total score, evening gown, fitness wear and fun fashion wear are each valued at 20 percent. Each contestant has the opportunity to select a platform of her choice, which she spends the year promoting.

Chamber's platform, "Dare to Dream," is based on her passion for teenagers, especially teenage girls. "I want to encourage high school girls about their inner-beauty and the importance of self-confidence. Positive role models are few and far between for them," she said.

Chambers compared her coming year as Miss North Carolina International to a job. "I was interviewed, offered a job and chosen. It will be a year of amazing experiences and I am going to do all that I can."
