Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan and Asheville Deputy Police Chief Wade Wood will present Policing and Minority Communities at 9:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 13 in UNC Asheville’s Reuter Center.
This lecture and discussion comes in the wake of months of protest and unrest across the United States following police killings of several unarmed African-Americans. This event is part of the OLLI (Osher Lifelong Learning Institute) at UNC Asheville Black History Month series.
All events in the series are free and open to the public and take place in UNC Asheville’s Reuter Center:
Feb. 6 at 9:30 a.m.: The Grimke Sisters: Abolitionist Activists – A film screening and discussion led by Catherine Frank, executive director of OLLI, and Jim Lenburg, retired professor of history and humanities at Mars Hill University.
Feb. 6 at 11:30 a.m.: Fab Friday Lecture, An African-American Woman’s Perspective of UNC Asheville – A presentation by Dee James, UNC Asheville alumna and professor of literature.
Feb. 13 at 9:30 a.m.: Policing and Minority Communities – A lecture and discussion featuring Buncombe County Sheriff Van Duncan and Asheville Deputy Police Chief Wade Wood.
Feb. 20 at 9:30 a.m.: A History of Slavery in Asheville – A presentation by Deborah Miles, director of UNC Asheville’s Center for Diversity Education, and Darin Waters, assistant professor of history at UNC Asheville.
