UNC Asheville Joins the National #GivingTuesday Movement

UNC Asheville will participate in #GivingTuesday on Dec. 2, a first of its kind national effort that will harness the collective power of a unique blend of partners—nonprofits, families, businesses and individuals—to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.

Coinciding with the Thanksgiving Holiday and the kickoff of the holiday shopping season, #GivingTuesday was founded in 2012 by New York’s 92nd Street Y in partnership with the United Nations Foundation to inspire people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, give back in better, smarter ways to the causes they support and help create a better world.

UNC Asheville will encourage gifts of any size to provide student assistance—from academics to athletics. Individuals can show their support on social media by using the hashtags #GivingTuesday #uncavl, and tell the world about their commitment to UNC Asheville by posting an #UNselfie—an unselfish selfie that explains their gift.

The university aims to raise at least $10,000 with 100 or more donors supporting scholarships and other initiatives for undergraduate students. The Bulldogs also will rally community support for student-athletes, and several students will be working on community service projects during the day.

“We have challenged all UNC Asheville Bulldogs to be bold this year,” said Janet Cone, senior administrator for university enterprises and director of athletics. “GivingTuesday provides each of us with the perfect avenue to put our words into action by inviting a neighbor or co-worker to be your guest at a home athletic event, volunteering your time in the community, investing in the annual Bulldog Athletics Association Scholarship Fund Drive, or spreading the word that the Bulldogs are our team and Asheville is our town.”
