Summer Reading Camps in Full Swing

Summer Reading Camps are in session for 3rd grade students across the county. Over 200 students are participating in the reading program and are working hard to complete their reading folders to increase their proficiency in reading.

Attendance is optional, but there are many benefits for students attending the camps, including receiving small-group and individualized reading instruction, continued work on reading portfolios, participating in literary interactions, and using a variety of technology.

In spite of it being summer, the students seem to be enjoying their time at school. One student commented to a teacher, “I wish school was like this.”

The teacher replied, “Are you having fun with the reading?”

“I like the four-hour days!” The student answered.

Kids will definitely be kids, but much like eating broccoli, there are definite benefits. Students participating will also avoid the “summer slide.” Each summer, during the annual hiatus from school, reading skills often decline. This phenomenon is sometimes called “summer slide”. Studies show that students often lose more than two months of reading achievement over summer vacation. Research shows that reading a minimum of six “just-right” books during the summer may keep a struggling reader from regressing.
