Yesterday, USA Cycling announced that Asheville will host National Championships for collegiate road cycling in the United States in May of 2015 and 2016. USA Cycling evaluated potential host cities using various criteria including: accessibility, community support, course options, technical expertise and the organization’s commitment to volunteer recruitment and marketing.

The Asheville Buncombe Regional Sports Commission in collaboration with the Mars Hill College Cycling Team and the
Asheville Bicycle Racing Club put in the joint proposal earlier this year. The announcement strengthens Asheville’s
position as a premier destination for cycling competitions. Asheville was previously selected to host the USA Cycling
Cyclo-cross National Championships at Biltmore Estate in December of 2016.

USA Cycling National Events Director,Tony Leko commented,“The Asheville area has such rich history in collegiate
cycling with successful cycling programs surrounding it. Collegiate cycling powers like Mars Hill College, Lees-McRae
College and Brevard College are each very close to Asheville and should create an extremely festive atmosphere.”

Terry Wilson, board member of the Asheville Bicycle Racing Club and Race Director of the French Broad Cycling Classic
noted that,“with developmental racing in the Club’s roots and still very much a primary objective, the Asheville Bicycle
Racing Club was quite pleased to have been able to lend a hand to the effort to bring the Collegiate Nationals to our community. Many of the athletes attending the Nationals will have raced their way up through the junior ranks in events such as our July 19-21, 2013 French Broad Cycling Classic (frenchbroadcyclingclassic.com).”

“Mars Hill is thrilled to help host collegiate road nationals, somethingwe’ve dreamed about for years,”said Mars Hill Cycling Coach, Hugh Moran. “The courses are fun, challenging, and absolutely beautiful. We’re going to help make this an awesome experience for collegiate racers, both on and off the bike, and look forward to showcasing all the Asheville region has to offer.”
